Diva that is so true. My b/f of a few months asked so are you losing your hair. Do you have bald spots ? This is even after he saw pics of me without extensions. I have had quite a few others ask this also. Then this week a longtime guy friend came by and he said my hair looked better and I told him I now have a weave. He got this look of horror on his face and said you mean you got it sewn into your scalp? I had to convince him for 10 min that weaves are not sewn into your head that it is a braid the hair is sewn to. I was so frustrated at him I was ready for him to leave my house. Some people just dont get it!
Exactly.. and it's aggravating as HELL.. That's why I don't tell everyone.. I don't think I should HAVE to explain my hair choices to anyone! My good friends don't make me that's why they know "my secret".. (Plus it's hard not to know when your friends see you go from Halle/Fantasia short to shoulder length in a weekend!!!)
I do have one friend who's husband thought it was "funny" to out me about my weave in front of a room full of people whenever I came over to their house, until I pulled him aside and told him how rude I thought that was.. I asked him if he was willing to out all of the women wearing breat implants and folks who may have had a "little work done" on their face/body.. and oh how about the men who REALLY have small di*** but were lying to women about it.. Should we out all of them publically??? And how about his fake teeth, should I mention that to a roomful of people AT HIS HOUSE?? If we're going to out "fake" $h!t.. then's let's out EVERYONE!!! He stopped doing it that after that..
I have PLENTY of thick healthy hair and I wear extensions cause I want to KEEP my thick healthy hair, and I wear them cause it gives me OPTIONS.. Short to long... Long to short.. My hair weave whatever.. I used to avoid cutting my hair, but now If I decide to go short short I know ANYTIME I want long hair again, I can have it.. I started wearing extensions again because for two years I wore a SHORT hairstyle (think Halle Berry or Fantasia) and I was ready to grow it out, but HATED having to deal with that in-between period you have with short short hair cuts.. So bottomline is.. I wear extensions because I WANT to.. not because I have to.. BUT if I had to wear 'em?? SO WHAT IF I DID??? I'm glad to know there's options out there..

Thanks to Kalika I have a new answer: "Yes, they're extensions and I've sewn them right to my scalp!" (Maybe then no one will want to look at them and touch them.) Too funny!
Here's to the end of my BAD HAIR LIFE!

Kalika! I like that one.. We have a similar sense of humor! . Years ago when i wore braid extensions, a coworker would ask me "how do u get your hair like that, u get up every morning and put those tiny braids in your hair?" And i said "yes, It's a lot of work too doing this every morning, I have over 300 plaits in my hair can u imagine how long that takes!" (trying to make her realize the stupidity in her question).. And for good measure, I added -- "that's why I'm arrive a lil late every morning to the office" lol
Girl that is FUNNY!!!

Like when I tell folks I'm wearing a sew-in weave, they think that I actually sew the hair to my scalp..
Damn, I never got fun questions like that when i wore sew in's. I would take it and run with it.
"they sew it into your SCALP??!!!" *give them big, sad puppy eyes* "yes, the bleeding usually goes away after the first week or so" then begin to cry muttering "the pain.. the pain"
As much fun as that approach sounds like.. (and I do like the shock and torture factor in this..) I decided to eliminate the potential for stupid questions to be asked at all..

Thanks for all your responses. They made this an interesting thread! I think I need to practice saying "thank you" and shutting my mouth to keep unwanted people from pawing my head. I think I'll use the strategy of telling people I'd hug and not telling those I don't feel comfortable getting that physically close to, because almost everyone I tell seems to want to touch my hair and head. It reminds me of when I was pregnant and even people (especially men) I didn't know thought it was okay to come up and touch my pregnant tummy. My daughter-in-law who is an attorney even experienced this from other male attorneys in the courtroom!
Good for you.. It's really none of anyone's business.. Because in my experience folks who don't know anything about extensions assume that extensions = hair loss issue, and that's such a narrow view of extensions and those who REALLY wear them. Plus I hate fielding STUPID extensions questions.. Like when I tell folks I'm wearing a sew-in weave, they think that I actually sew the hair to my scalp.. I've NO patience for stupidity..

I know!! i think its totally rude for people to ask...ESPECIALLY if other people are around. What I get more often than not, is the people that don't ask but when they go to hug you goodbye or hello they touch your head... I hate that and its weird. My hair is naturally very thick and long, but I still love putting extensions in cause you can never have too much hair, in my book!
But if I admit to the people who ask...they think ALL my hair is fake. lol

Whenever i see meet people with gorgeous hair its hard not to compliment, if they say its extensions usually im interested in how the hair feels with the bonds (good extensions that look natural are usually attached well and therefore the bonds cant be easily felt-well within reason).
But yeah, i wouldnt like strangers touching my hair its part of my personal space LOL
Once my girl complimented me on
my outfit and how it showed off my cleavage, and i popped out my
"Curve" silicone cutlet and tossed it to her. and said "shoot girl, u
can have cleavage like this too".
OH HELL NO!!!
WE are VERY, VERY close! Longtime gal pals. Couldn't get that personal w/ everybody! . But she ended up getting some too!!
people i dont know too well just get a 'thanks', im such a blabbermouth with my friends that they all know already and yes they do get allowed to 'pick through my hair', ..............but sometimes, there's that one lady who is a perfect stranger and who really does have obviously crappy hair---and i do choose to tell her that its extensions and i do them myself and that she should have a look at hairboutique.com (i wish someone had told me about 15years ago!)

I don't ever try to pretend that I'm au natural, because I change my hair so frequently and dramatically that it's obvious. In just the past year I've had blonde, black, purple, dreads, short, long, you name it.
I suppose if I met someone who I'd never see again, I wouldn't feel the need to disclose my extensions.
Usually if someone seems really envious I want to share the love and let them know that they too can be this fabulous!

If you've told them you're wearing extensions
and they want to look at your bonds (why do people always want to do
this?) do you let them? (It is always kind of creepy for me to have
people digging through my hair... I think maybe I need to stop telling
them it's extensions??? It is weird how interested people are in
this...)
Kristie, wow I can't imagine letting someone ramble thru my hair unless
it's a close friend. I might or might not say that i am wear ing
extensions tho, depends on setting. But the show n tell (and touch,
eww) is OUT! Agan, a close friend is different. Once my girl
complimented me on my outfit and how it showed off my cleavage, and i
popped out my "Curve" silicone cutlet and tossed it to her. and said
"shoot girl, u can have cleavage like this too". So friends get all the
info!
I'm w/ Kalika, to friends i say: "B- u know this is a WEAVE!"
