My favorite was about shoulderblade length, when I could "ruffle it up" and have my bangs fall into my eyes. That was fun.

For me before, it was also at the point where it is too long to be considered bob length and can be pulled back into a pony tail.

Reaching shoulder length when growing out a mid length style in early 1990's was found an accomplishment and a sign of successful progress. It was past that awkward stage we all dislike and allowed my hair to be tied into a nice ponytail.

I liked my hair when the top layer was just above my ear and I could flick out the lower layers like this:
