I seriously need help!! Orange + purple hair!!

I think you mis-read Jen's post.  She doesn't have a color disaster on her hands yet.  She's talking about a STRAND test.  She doesn't need to color condition strip her whole head.
I'll try to bring you up to date and summarize her prior posts, etc.
Her roots are growing in darker than the previously, salon-lightened length.  She originally talked about lightening the roots to match the length.
Now she wants to lighten the roots... almost, but not quite as light as the length.  Then pull a little color through at the end to match up and darken the length just a tad.
She's currently doing strand tests to get the shade right - but is having trouble getting enough orange/gold out of the roots.  The level 8 did nothing to the length, so she thought to try a level 7.  She didn't pull through at the end though - she left it on the length for the whole processing time.  Thus she learned a lesson about purple!  ;)

I had read about "muddy ends," too, I don't know what I was thinking.  I didn't know it would be so dark. 

OK, it sounds worse than it really is, but here's the deal.  I went to Sally's and bought Miss Clairol in a level 8 ash blonde with a blue base and did a strand test with a 20 vol developer.  Currently I have about level 8 hair with level 6 roots growing in (a little grey, too).  So the blonde stayed a nice blonde but the roots turned out orange/gold.  Even with a blue-based color!  I'm so confused.  Did I not use the right devloper?
