Hey Jenny.....you have inspired me to finally look into synth!! I never thought this day would come.
I LOVE THE WAVES!!

You have a mix of PH and Dome. Which one do you think is the better quality hair. I know it will take some testing to really answer this question, but just from look and feel what would your pick be between the two?
Thank You.....this forum is pretty darn kewl!!

Fina,

If you're planning on doing the same process, just make sure it's the "string" method, also known as Hairpolice method. Sometimes the word "pinchbraids" is used to describe a few processes other than what we're talking about here.

Actually, Fina, where are you located? There might be a Hairpolice affiliate in your area (they're listed here: http://hairpolice.com/affiliates.shtml ).

:)

Edit to say: I just saw that you're in Dallas. Perhaps if you were willing to drive down to Austin, there are two HP affiliates there. I have no knowledge of their work of course, but it may be worth a try:

Michelle Coleman
Micky Kibbe & Penny Boone

Hey Mer,

My real hair is extremely thin, fine, straight, and fragile (think Tom Petty). I bleach it (obviously), which causes some damage, but that's actually a new thing. For years, I only used peroxide and got a very light color from that, but not quite this white-ish, and it was still damaging (some of this is due to unintentional overlapping when I did my roots).

My real color is a light brown/dirty blonde (very ashy, not gold); I haven't really seen it for years, though. Most hairstylists seem to think it's about a Level 6 or 7, and I can achieve a level 10 quite easily with a home peroxide dye, like Loreal Preference, probably because it's so thin. On the downside, even before I dyed it, it was never very strong or healthy-looking.

A few years ago, my hair was fairly long from the ears down, but even then, I could only wear those baby barrettes. The entire head of hair, in ponytail diameter, was like the size of a dime.

:)

DUUUUUUUUH

I can't believe I thought that pic of Blondie was you...!!

OK, I did some checking around locally. I am going to start looking at the local ethnic salons for some help with hair installation. . .I've surfed around a bit and found some ladies who specialize in "braiding" and I notice that the also say they do "strand by strand" and "fusion" extensions.

I've had horrible experiences in the past being a caucasian in the braiding world, but I'm gonna look around and see what I can find out. . .

I"ll keep you posted. . .as always. . .

kimbearly, a pinchbraid is a small braid used to attach the hair. it is almost like this http://community.webshots.com/photo/100809390/103954149cijQkl

but not wrapped. string is incorporated in the braid and then tied off at the end to keep the braid from slipping. here is a HOW TO http://www.hairalchemy.com/tutorial/index.html

Thanks Bridget.

I had some shrinkies in before, and I do think they're a good method (especially for DIY). But I don't think I shrunk them down quite enough or something. I definitely need to experiment more.

Ideally, I would prefer not to have any glue in my hair at all, just because my hair is so, so porous and hard to deal with. But perhaps next time, I'll try a topmost row of shrinkies or even extendtubes. I do think they would be easier to conceal around the part than braids and would possibly enable us to go a row higher. :)

Jenny - wow girl! your hair looks so good! I'm so excited for you!

did you have the shrinkies before these pinch braids or did you decide not to do shrinkies?
It is what it is...

Thanks everyone--you girls are so sweet. Kalika, you cut me up! Thanks for all of your inspirational photos--I was hellbent on getting the hair after I saw how great it looked on you.

Fina: That thumbnail in the previous pic was not me--it was an old picture of Debby Harry. I've never had bangs, so the hair in the front and top are basically the way they've always been. I'll post another pic of my hair with no barrette in a few days. It's the biggest challenge I face in terms of styling--camoflaging all of the damage and thinness I have on top. If the braids go up too high, they're visible (especially on me, because the hair's so thin and so white), but if they're not high enough, I don't get enough fullness. I think Isaac has hit on a happy medium.

Teasing actually works OK, but I'm trying not to do that, since it just seems to damage the hair more. I also have a wacky cowlick in the crown (you can see it in my first photo), so the hair always wants to separate at that point. Grrr.....

Seriously, though, my real hair is a disaster! I had a few terrible extensions experiences (before the pinchbraids and Isaac), and I'm still growing it out from that. And then, of course, there's the bleach, which certainly doesn't help, as well as the fact that I just wasn't born with good hair. I've also gone throgh a few periods of shedding/hairloss (perhaps stress or nutrition-related?), so I've got lots of little baby hairs growing all over the place. Fortunately for me, though, I don't have a widening part or bald spots (if I did, I really don't think extensions would work at all).

Isaac actually took all the braids out at once this time (usually he replaces one with another), so I saw my hair for the first time in almost a year. It's actually growing back now, but it's going to be a slow, painful process, I'm sure. I really should've taken a before photo--you'd be amazed by how little hair I actually have.... :)

P.S.--Yeah, the prices are quite reasonable. It's obviously more expensive if he gets the hair for you (especially if it's human), and I really just get the ends trimmed; he sort of layered the bottom a bit as he installed them, then just razored the ends a bit. I'm sure it'd be more expensive, however, if there's more extensive cutting or coloring involved. Also, it's a completely dry application (as many extensions installs are), so there's no washing or anything like that, which cuts down on the time considerably. :)

Jenny, your hair looks FABULOUS! Isaac does a great job doesn't he? He does my hair as well and I'm always impressed at the great job he does.

Better Late than Never . . .wow you gals are hard to keep up with!!!

Went out to a movie last night (speaking of Gwen S. -- saw the aviator -- Jenny's MUCH hotter), slept a bit late, got on line, and WHOA!!!

I am LYING FLAT ON THE FLOOR IN DISBELIEF THAT ISAAC CHARGED ONLY $350 for the INSTALL. . .OK, that's it, I'm coming to New York.

I'm most curious about the blending in the front. Jenny you talk about the problem areas of your hair -- I noticed you had bangs in your other photo, and you appear bang-less in the photo now, or is that why you have the clip in??

IMHO, the hands down, *MOST* difficult part of wearing/styling hair extensions is the blending part in the front. There are a gazillion extensionists out there who can do great work but essentially the client looks the same right around the face area -- and it's so common to get that "bangs with long hair" look.

I am really curious to see the front a bit better Jenny, and to see how you work with it (that's the problem with the long long hair in the back too--did you ever notice how Paris Hilton often has those 2 clips in the sides of her hair, just above her ears, obviously to try to help the blending).

OK, enough babbling.

THANKS ALL --

Fina

Thanks, Scotchy.

Update: I slept with my hair in a low bun wrapped in a schungi last night, and it looks exactly the same today. With human, I usually found that the hair matted up and kinked overnight, but the synth isn't doing that so far. :)
