QuoteReplyTopic: to straighten my permed hair Posted: December 31 2001 at 7:52pm
Hello. I would appreciate some advice on how to "un-perm" my hair. I was body permed back in July for a change of pace. Now I`m ready to have straight(er) hair again. I am pretty sure that hair can also be straightened using perm solution. Am I wrong about this? If it is possible, then how does one go about performing this task? Do you mix the solutions in the same manner as one would for a normal perm? My hair is already chemically treated with colour, and I`ve just started using a number of salon products to (hopefully) whip it into better condition; the shampoos and conditioner seem to be improving things thusfar. I am also seriously considering having my shoulder-length hair cut to my chin, so snipping off chemically-damaged ends wouldn`t be all that traumatic for me if necessary. Can anyone guide me in this process please? Yes, I`ve already looked up the hair-straightening perm sites - I live in the middle of nowhere, so those aren`t feasible options for me.
I hope that someone can help. Thanks, Amy

The procedure you are thinking of is sometimes called a "reverse perm". I suggest before you attempt it you deep condition your hair. In this technique, permanent waving solution is combed through the hair from roots to ends to straighten it. It is recommended you wait at least two weeks after the perm (not a problem in your case) and the help of a friend would be good. Hold your head so your hair hangs straight down into the sink. If possible, you should be facing up to protect your eyes. Repeatedly comb the perm solution through your hair, using a large-toothed comb, until hair relaxes. Then neutralize and rinse completely. I have used this technique in the past with very good results. However, NEVER use a chemical relaxer with lye to straighten your perm. The chemicals used to perm hair and the lye in the relaxer are not compatible and will melt your hair. Since your hair is already colored, use a gentle perm for color treated hair and make sure your comb has smooth edges that won`t tear or break your hair. Deep condition your hair a few days afterwards too. Good luck! :)
Thank you muchly. You know, I was actually checking out some relaxers for African hair, but something about them seemed a bit.....off; for me, at least. It did say on the box not to use them on colour-treated or permed hair or something. I was sure that perm solution would probably be the better option for a white gal like me. Plus, my mom straightened my hair with a perm years ago. Anyway, I think I`m going to try it out soon. Thanks again. I really appreciate the input.

I am glad you decided against the hair relaxer as your hair would have probably melted. If I could suggest, why not go to a salon that offers hair straightening. There are many wonderful products out there for just this purpose. They are not the same as an actual perm, alkthough they are made up with the same key ingredients. They are more gentle on the hair and they are in a creme base. Please take the advise of deep conditioning before hand. YOu will not be able to re-perm your hair if you wish to go back curly until all of the existing hair has been removed.
