I've seen those ez threaders at the local black hair shops, for threading beads onto hair. Considered picking one up, but it looked too thick to pass through an extend-tube. Shrinkies are bigger, though. Anyway, it looked hella easier than that darn hook I've been using. I'd considered making one myself from thin wire, just as Marie87 described.

Took me forever to figure out which thread this was in...

anyhow.  I use trichlorethene aka trichloroethylene aka TCE.

I don't know how much of a chemistry background you have but there are a few others out there with similar names that are not not not the same thing. 

I looked it up once before when Kristin had asked.  It's roughly $20/half liter.  I think.  There are different grades of it as well.  I don't know what the purity difference is between the lab grade and the home improvement store deck cleaner grade.

But you are used to buying industrial grade stuff for your soap so...

I use a regular bobby pin. Works like a charm and holds my hair in place while I thread it through.
