Combing is almost always gentler on hair, especially a wide-tooth model with flexible prongs. There used to be an old wives` tale about brushing hair 100 strokes every night for a great head, but all excessive brushing does is work away at the hair cuticle and can lead to breakage. Always use a comb on wet hair--never a brush--since hair`s hydrogen bonds are temporarily broken when hair is wet, making it more damage prone.

you need both! wide tooth seamless comb(like one from the kent finest range.) for wet hair and detangling. and a boar bristle brush for grooming. with long hair you should only be washing your hair once or twice a week. and brushing with a boar bristle brush takes the much needed oil from the roots and takes it to the ends. it also stimulates the scalp which promotes growth and it takes dirt and dust from hair, leaving it shiny and polished. the 100 strokes in the old days was to clean hair and spread oils, as they hardly ever washed long hair. oh and i know that it sounds gross to spread oils but it actually stops hair lookinbg greasy as it spreads it properly. i wash my hair only once a week and dare say i could do it less (but the icky factor sets in) when i used to wash it every day, the ends were really dry and if i missed a day it started to look greasy. if you wash your hair alot more that me then you wont need the boar bristle brush. (oh by the way i dont use a comb as i have no patience for it. but i never detangle my hair when wet, i wait till its dry and use a paddle brush. this brush is my friend!!!! it doesnt pull or break hairs. i comb hair if its wet and i want to put rollers in though. so brush or comb? the decision is yours.

(by the way i am aware that there is much debate on brushing and it really does depend on your hair type and how you use the tools. so see what works for you and remember to try any new routine for at least two weeks.) good luck...

For my hair, brushing works really well. I only comb when wet. When I comb my dry hair, it doesn`t look like it has been combed at all. I use a smooth wooden bristle brush.

Hello,

Your hair is actually the best to make this decision.
While I am comfortable with a boar bristle or soft bristled brush for detangling, I find that some women prefer to use only a comb.

If I were stranded on a desert island, I would have to say that I would prefer to have a brush with me.
I love combing my hair, but typically only do so when it is wet or soaked down with jojoba oil or
covered with conditioner in the shower, but even then I use, and always have used, a gentle brush to glide down my hair as the conditioner is being rinsed out.

You pretty much have to experiment with various brushes to find the one you like. One is never enough for me, though, as I have a basket full of various brushes in different bristle textures and such. Plastic, wooden, boar bristle, nylon brislte, etc.

Let your hair be the judge as to what feels best on your hair and the brush or comb that treats your hair right.

Happy growing,
Karen Marie

Finger rake dry hair section by section, brush hair starting with the ends section by section. I wash my scalp with very little shampoo(no alcohol or sulfates if possible) once a week. If my hair looks grimy before then, I wash with lukewarm water and a conditioner containing no alcohol, or silicone. Never, ever brush, finger rake while your hair is wet and is at it`s weakest. Oil the ends. I`ve only been doing this for a week and my hair`s condition is sooo much healthier. Comb? What`s that :)?
