Ok, I'm 13 and I hear lots of people talking about how perms ruined their hair and that they wish they stayed natural. I really don't want to ruin my hair but just about everyone I know has a relaxer. The urge to relax is KILLING me! My sister relaxed and had beautiful hair, but it's gotten really damaged. I really need some assistance over here about how to stay natural and healthy. I know my hair doesn't need a relaxer because I've tried and my hair is VERY stubborn and resistant (like it has a mind of it's own).
Hair Type- 4a/b *transitioning front of my head*
Length-ranges from 5-7 inches =)
Products- Garnier Fructis S & S Poo, Lustrasilk Shea Butter Mango Conditioner and Cantu-Leave in =)

Your hair sounds like the texture of mine. Relaxer resist, comb breaking, thick, coarse hair.

It took me years to find quality products and a regime that would work. The main reason the products weren't there. I grew up in the era where the pressing comb and the curling iron went on the stove.  You are lucky with all the products designed to help our type hair.

One thing I can tell you is always, always add your moisturizer to damp hair. For example after I wash and towel dry I apply Organic root stimulator Olive Oil Lotion and Infusium 23 for color treated/permed hair to my hair and twist it into sections. (My hair is neither) http://public.fotki.com/1babydimple/i_love_me_challenge/wett wist.html

I apply enough so that I can see it when I twist. Let it "almost" dry then I apply wild growth oil to the ends. I do this if I air dry or blow dry.

If you blow dry add a large toothed attachment comb and do a small section at a time and only blow dry 1x a week. Try to air dry as often as possible. It takes longer but your hair will be much healthier. If necessary I proceed to flat iron.

To maintain moisture through the week I re-apply the Olive oil and wild growth every day. It's not wet and you don't have to worry about your hair "froing - up" My hair is really dry and by the end of the day can look like I put nothing on it, but if I maintain this schedule it stays soft and pliable. Consistency is the secret to healthy hair.

You are young enough to start out your journey into womenhood with a beautiful head of hair. I wish someone would have schooled me. I hope this helped. If I can think of any other tricks I let you know.

http://nappturality.com/

This forum is for natural hair care.  I learned a whole lot there, especially as far as products to use and hair health.  Just don't go in there talking about relaxers or pressing or anything because you will get bashed.  That site dosen't condone the use of relaxers or any heat appliance.

Sweety I got a relaxer at about your age. I think 12 or something. My hair was mid back and I always got asked "are you indian?" Well that lasted for about 6 months and then here came the damage. Over the years my hair got shorter and shorter until it got to shoulder length were it stayed only because I rested my hair in braids alot. But girl it's not worth it. I have been natural for nearly two and a half year AND my hair is an inch away fro mid back. Alot of black women just don't know how to care for their relaxed hair or think they don't have to.

I try not to use heat more than once every couple of months. My usual styles are twists and box braids. I have recently discovered several different styles. Straw sets, I love them thinking of doing this at leat once a month! Rollersets, I brush out my hair and then I put hot rollers in it. Sometimes I go over the curls with a curling iron to smooth then out.

The products I use are:

  1. Cream Of Nature Shampoo
  2. Lutrasilk Cholestrol w/Aloe
  3. ORS Olive Oil Pack
  4. ORS Olive Oil hair dress
  5. Shea Butter
  6. WGO

Hair Type: 4a/3c Natural
Hair Length: Mid Back (growing out Layers)
Hair Goal: Long Layered Waist length/ Super Healthy!

Thanks everyone for your advice. I have been looking into the Organic Root Stimulator products, and I'm thinking of a regimen especially based on those products:

  • Shampoo with Uplifting Shampoo every 2 weeks
  • Deep Condition with Hair Mayo (every week)
  • Moisterize with Shea Butter Lotion (every day)
  • Oil scalp with Carrot Oil and Castor Oil (every day)

I'm also going to keep my hair braided in cornrows and box braids for a month at a time. I really hope this works because lots of people recommend this for my hair.

Hair Type- 4a/b *transitioning front of my head*
Length-ranges from 5-7 inches =)
Products- Garnier Fructis S & S Poo, Lustrasilk Shea Butter Mango Conditioner and Cantu-Leave in =)

Sounds like a winner, they have some really good products. If you need help along the way just ask there are some really great women in here who are able and willing to help.

Peace
