Hair Extensions?

I don't know too much about hair, but i've been wanting to go completely dark from the light brown color hair I have now to black.

So my mom went to a salon and asked our stylist about dying hair permanently black. She said it wont be a good idea because its really hard to lift a highlight even from dark brown hair and to get rid of it I would probably have to grow it all out.

So because my mother wouldn't let me do that after the reasonable explanation, I thought getting a red highlight-type thing would be cool.

I didn't actually want to get red highlights, but i've seen some people with redish-pink extensions that were the same length of their hair. It made it look like it was streaked and came out from the inside of their hair.

Is it a good idea to get extensions instead of highlights?
How long do they stay in for?
Do I take them out myself, or do I have someone else do it?
Are they usually really costly?

The clips don't show at all. They're underneath the extension hair and they snap onto your own hair.

I've gone from honey blonde to jet black and it rinsed out after several shampoos. The honey blonde may have been a little darker but the black was gone. Maybe it depends on the brand.

Like metalgirl said, when hair is porous, it grabs on and doesn't want to let go. I've had the same experience as asinnamon going darker.

The thing that stands out for me here is that her mom said no. I know when I was growing up, when mom said no it meant no and I had to find another way to either present the idea or forget it altogether. I'd hit mom up for a set of fun clip-ins and do the black and red thing with those. She might go for the idea!

If you go with the hennas used for body art you will not have the heavy metalic compunds usually found in henna box hair color kits.. The only drawback with using hennas for coloring is the time you have to leave the henna on your hair. Plus you usally have to mix in some indigos and other natural powders to get the color you want or the hair will have a reddish hue to it..
