Plastic or 'tortoiseshell' (they arn't,their plastic but tortoiseshell colour) barrettes usually (in UK) have a metal clip on the back. Here you can get plastic ones which work like the leather type, with a wide band with holes at either end through which you slide a long pin. These available in states? :-)>
Thanks for the info. I do have one of those things you mentioned with the stick. Mine is a piece of black heavy material.. I use it when I make a bun to support the weight of my hair so it isn't so heavy. I do not pull much hair back from the sides and that thing is way too big for the amount of hair. It would fall out. Thanks tho, I was just wondering about metal barrettes since George Michael pronounced judgement on them! I'll just keep going with what I have been doing. I love the scrunchies too.. I buy them constantly and have a whole 3 tier basket holder on my wall full of them. What did we do before they hit the market anyway?!! ;-) Cher~> Well, I use barrettes only very rarely myself> - usually all I use in my hair is a soft scrunchie,> although lately I have tried pinning my bangs> back (I am growing them out). Woops.. first off, I did spell barrette wrong! Thanks for correcting me. I was reading on the new George Michael site about using barrettes and he said never to use metal ones, to use plastic or tortise shell ones? :-/ I have never heard of these before myself. And since my hair is thick, I can't imagine anything but metal doing the job. Viewing George Michael's pictures, I have not seen where he uses anything to secure hair, or even parts it for that matter. Personally, I thought the gray haired ladies would look much better with a part or their hair puffed up in the front with a barrette. That's how I got on this topic.. I went there to view those particuliar pictures and started roaming around..and saw his comment on fasteners. Thanks for your reply.. Here in the UK I have never seen one that was not metal, I think that it would be too hard to create a powerful enough spring. My wife used to use one of those leather/wood barrettes (note UK spelling) and this seemed to work ok.
I would like some info on barretts. I have used metal barretts for years..the ones you buy in Walmart, Sally's or even expensive ones-whatever suits my fancy. I love to pull the sides to the back of my head with a barrett, this is my usual hairdo, then usually braid the remainder or use one of those scruncie's to hold it back. Anyway.. I would like to know where you can find a barrett that is not metal? I don't believe I have ever seen them before, maybe I am looking in all the wrong places. I do get more breakage where I use the barretts and want to do whatever I can to protect my hair. I do have heavy hair so I can't imagine anything but metal being able to hold it in place. So, my question is..what does everyone do for barretts? Would love some feedback.. thanks.. Cher~
