JJ:Boy, do I understand about your cat hurling you hairtie. I don't keep my cat out of the bedroom, either. And after 8 yrs, I don't want to start ... they're very cuddly in the night. But when they're young, they love entertainment at ALL hours. and don't you love hearing those "herk-herk" noises at 4 a.m.?And I can sure see how it'd be easy for the cat to hook those handy little claws into the terrycloth. Monty had a good idea with the gel-oid end-ties, and Karen has suggested the ends-glued-together larger hair ties which I have found (at an Alco, a generic low-price department store) very satisfactory on my braid for -- say -- a week now since I bought them.RunningWild

I just bought a product called Band-Mi Ponytail Holders at Sally Beauty Supply. It says on the package: snag-free, easy styling, long lasting, virtually unbreakable. There are two different colors--black and clear. They feel like that sticky stuff that holds free samples on the pages of magazines--except these things aren't sticky. I used them all day and even slept in one--not a single tangle when I took it out. Not bad. I paid $2.99 for them (48 in the bag). One drawback is that they are only 1 size--small. HTHmonty

You might want to try plain elastic bands that are glued shut rather than fastened with metal crimps. I found some at the local Sally Beauty Supply about 8 months ago. I don't use them often, but they're nice to have.I love the RareGems hair ties, but I won't sleep with them on - I'm too afraid I'll lie on the hard parts and that would hurt. I wear them a whole lot during the day, though!Laura Janelswanson@sunflower.bio.indiana.edu

OK... I need help finding an alternate hair-safe tie of some sort to use on my braids when sleeping. Up until now I've been using those little elastic terry cloth circles, but unfortunately they're my cat's favorite toy. Several times in the last month I've woken up in the middle of the night to him trying to tug the bands off my braids... well yesterday he managed to get one off in the middle of the night, swallow it, and throw it up while I was trying to eat breakfast. I can't use the raregems ones, because I need something with out danglies that can get caught in my sheets and blankets. I'd try just using a leather thong... but I have a feeling I'd wake up to the cat chewing on that as well. Any suggestions for other ties that don't have little metal bits? If I go back to sleeping with my hair loose it turns into a wad of knots.-jj
