Talk your stylist about your scalp problems before you get a relaxer. They may wait until the problem is corrected to prevent scalp irritation. The relaxer is put in your hair before it is washed and styled. A week beforehand, deep condition your hair. The keys to keeping relaxed hair healthy are conditioning and using as little heat as possible. Use a daily conditioner and products without alcohol. If you want a little curl in your hair, try using rollers and setting lotion instead of a curling iron. Have your stylist wrap your hair (either around your head or with large rollers) after relaxing. It's healthier than using a blow dryer. At home, wrap your hair at night and tie a silky scarf around it. Wrapping keeps your hair smooth. Relaxing will last only as long as your hair grows out, usually in 6 to 8 weeks. Your stylist will be able to determine when. Once your hair grows out, the relaxer will only be placed on the new growth at your scalp. I recommend the following products: Designer Touch relaxer (sold in salons only), Redken's All Soft line, Alternatives oil moisturizer, Sebastian Potion #9, Gentle Treatment conditioning and setting lotion, Aveda pomade.

I have very wavy hair, and I'd like to straighten it at a salon, however I don't know if that would damage my hair severely... I also have a flaky scalp, and I am wondering if the chemicals will make it worse. Do I straighten it, and then get a haircut, or visaversa? If anyone has any tips on whether I should take any precautions before going to the salon, like deepcoditioning hair/not using silicone based products, I would really appreciate it.Also, after straigtening how long do the results last, and do I have to blow dry my hair straight, or will it air dry OK?
