I would like to thank everyone who has offered suggestions. I wish I had discovered this forum a long time agoI use a similar detangling technique as jennifer j. At night time I also braid my hair. For the gym I usually put it in a pony table, but that doesn't help. I will try braiding it next time. I seldom blow dry. I use KMS shampoo and conditioner, washing only once or twice a week. Every day I add the Nexus mosisturizer I mentioned. I don't use any other hair spray, gel, mousse, etc. What type of hair oil do you use?

I have thick, curly hair that is about half way down my back when it is wet, shorter when it is dry.The longer it grows the more tangling I get, until now.About two months ago I tried the OUIDAD line. The Deep Treatment is fantastic. Now that my hair is getting back into good shape it tangles less and less. I find I use less conditionner after a shampoo and can comb my hair more easily after a shower with less snarls to work out (very few). When I need to do another deep treatment I notice my hair tangling again. With each treatment though, the effects of the treatment last longer and longer. This line has transformed my hair. No waxes or silicones so I don't have to weight it down to control the curl and wave. Instead my hair is shiny and healthy and the curls bounce and flow rather then snarl and tangle or hang in heavy clumps. You might want to try the deep treatment and see if it helps.

Hi Josephine,I totally agree with everyone that has been recommended. Like Erica I hate spending money unless I have to but several years ago I came to a crossroads where the non-salon products just would not work for my hair which is naturally wavy and very thick and on top of that...I highlight it 4x a year. UGH. Talk about tangles from hell.I do buy as cheaply as possible and that is why I recommend WW Beauty or some of the other stores on the Internet. I joined the Gold Club at WW Beauty and they have incredible...club member only specials. Awhile back I picked up ARTec Smoothing shampoo and conditioner for a total of $16 for both which is really cheap for ARTec.However, Cher and Dawn who both have gorgeous hair have had great luck with Nature's Gate which is much less. I personally like the NG Chamomile shampoo and conditioner and you can find it at some Targets, Kmarts and WalMarts. I have gotten it on sale and spent less than $5 for the combo of shampoo/conditioner.A good pic or wide toothed comb is absolutely essential. Jennifer gave some great advice on how to detangle starting at the bottom of the hair. Be sure you get a very smooth comb. When you have thick wavy hair like we do, you must use a good moisturizing shampoo or at the very least a good moisturizing conditioner. A good leave in conditioner will help your hair not tangle during the day and Aveda's Elixer is one of the best although I also love ARTec' Smoothing Serum. The Smoothing Serum works on my hair even when I airdry and it removes all tangles and frizz.Dave Decker..who has long thick hair...wrote a great article on detangling techniques. I have included the URL for your review. Also you may want to read Hair Care for the Gym at:http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip008.htmHang in there...once you get your own personal techniques down, it will get easier. My hair which used to tangle terribly almost never tangles now with my own routine worked out.Best wishes,KarenPS. Besides the ARTec Smoothing Serum I have great luck with KMS Flat Out. No....I don't have curly hair, but a little dab works great on defrizzing and detangling my hair. I love it.> I hair that reaches my lower back. Traditionally, I think most people would suggest that you use a good leave-in conditioner. However, it is my belief, that leave-ins were made for people with straight, fine hair. Most spray on leave-ins also contain fixatives that leave your hair coated and sticky or stiff-- this is no fun to feel when you run your hands through your hair! My method to combatting my unmanageablity is a bit less mainstream than the typical leave in,... but give it a shot. After shampooing and condtioning in the shower, I towell dry my hair (gently) and then apply a nickel size dollop of REGULAR conditioner to my hair (I use ARTec Smoothing Cond.). This method has worked wonders for me for the last five years and has also saved me precious pennies since I don't have to spend extra on a sepperate bottle that is essentially water and silicone!Sherry

You also might want to try a spray-on, leave-in conditioner, especially on snarls. Spray and comb through gently to avoid pulling and breaking hair.In most areas this time of year, the more you run your fingers, combs, etc. through your hair the more STATIC ELECTRICITY builds up and the more prone to tangles/unmanageability it can be. So try wearing your hair in "fuss-free" styles like braids, buns, etc. That way you won't be tempted to touch your hair and it won't be rubbing against your chair back, etc. and building up static. Good luck!> I hair that reaches my lower back. It's naturally> wavy, though not very obvious at this lenght. I have similar hair and I've found that I need to use good quality shampoo and a very heavy conditioner and even hair oil to keep my hair soft and manageable. Do you blowdry your hair? That can make it rough and more prone to tangles. Also a polished wide toothed comb can make a world of difference in your ability to detangle your hair without pulling it out. What I do is run the comb through my hair until I encounter a tangle, then I use my fingers to dislodge the tangle and re-comb. If I just try to rip the comb through it tightens the hairs into a knot which is harder to get out and weakens the hair creating breakage. Working from the ends of your hair to the roots helps a lot.Personally I braid my hair at night and if I go to the gym either braid it or put it up in a bun. That way I avoid having to detangle it in the morning and after a work-out. I also use a bit of hair oil on the ends of my braids at night so that the hairs are smoother and less likely to catch each other.Good luck.-jj

Here's the best advice I can give. Do NOT try to run your fingers through your hair!!! I know this sounds crazy, but I have similar problems with my hair. It's a few inches pat my shoulders and curly and tangled as well. Here's what I do. I used Artec Moisturizing Texture line Shampoo and Conditioner ($20 for a twin pack of 32oz of shampoo and conditioner) or on somedays Optimum Care Shampoo and Conditioner ($3 each). I wash my hair in the shower and I use a large toothed comb and only detangle in the the shower while conditioning with a final cool rinse. I then apply mouse and gel or pomade depending on if my hair is up or down. I do not try to comb oput my hair when it is dry... it breaks too much. One thing I have learned I my hair is spiral- curled. Unless I blowdry it straight, I cannot just run my finger through it. I can pull the curls and watch them spring up and all that good stuff, but once it's styled and has dried. It's done. If I try to mess with it too much it gets frizzy of if I comb it, it will and does break. I hope this all helped. Good luck!------Marsha :-)Marti280@aol.com

Your description fits my hair exactly! Except that my hair has spots that are wavy and spots that are more curly. Anyhow, here's what works for me:1. Weekly hot oil treatments2. Washing my hair at MOST every other day, preferably every two days.3. Using "frizz-ease" or a similiar product. (I've heard that salon brands work better--I'm too cheap so I've never tried them! Karen can prob. recommend good products here)I wear my hair up most of the time, but on days that I want to wear it down, I wash it & put it in pin curls for the night. When I wake up, it has good curl that lasts several days--but my hair feels soft & is more "brushable" than if I had used a curling iron or hair dryer.I hope this information helps. Good luck!> I hair that reaches my lower back. It's naturally> wavy, though not very obvious at this lenght.
