I'm fairly new here to the board and was wondering what exactly are the problems with dimethicone/silicone. I just bought a bottle of Finesse conditioner and noticed on the ingredient list that it contained dimethicone. Is this bad?

Jennifer,I am not aware of any danger from the use of dimethicone. It is a light oil made from Silicone and non toxic to humans. It's used frequently in glossers, and pomades. It helps tame frizz, and create shine. The worst I can imagine is that it may weigh your hair down a bit, if your hair is fine.

Hi Jennifer,Dimethicone and other "cones" can build up on the hairshaft and cause it to be dry and brittle. I had this happen to me and others have said the same when using products that contain 'cones. Some people don't seem to have this problem, and others have noticed it two years into using these products. That's what how it went for me. I guess only time will tell if it's best for your hair to use silicone.Hope this helps you,Holly

Silicones usually work best for coarse hair.Use a clarifier if you're afraid of the build up.Not recommended for oily hair though.

Hi,My hair is coarse, and straight, and I still had problems with silicone over time. Some people have it right away, and some people never have any problems. It seems from what I read here on the board though that people with curly hair (and that can also include coarse, since that often goes together)seem to have better results. I wouldn't use clarifying shampoos too often, they can be very drying. If you have to keep using clarifying shampoo because of the silicone build-up, my advice is to re-think why your using these products. If it's for moisturizing properties, there are better ingredients to be found.Hope this helps you,Holly

Nope...I don't use silicones for the sake of chemical discrimination..he...he.Its just based on my past experience with silicones.I try to look for a gentle clarifying daily shampoo like the Aveda's Purefume.Clarifiers work well for my oily hair and gel biuldup and my hair is not dry at all neither is it over oily.

I have course, curly hair and have really benefited from Ouidad products and Aubrey organics. Basically, the philosophy of Ouidad is to build healthy hair form the inside out so that you do not need products such as silicon. (see www.ouidad.com). However, I bought the Fudge shaper based on the review in Hair Boutique. It contains a lot of waxes such as lanolin and carnauba. What does everyone think about the use of waxes in styling products. Fudge says ht eshaper product will wash out. I am wondering if it will be okay to use on special occasions.
