Removing Hair Extensions??

Hi,

I am involved in an Easter production, and I play the part of Jesus. Other years I have been wearing a wig, but this year, we decided to try hair extensions. We tried them out the other night, and they worked great, right up until I had to take them out! What a nightmare!! We bought extensions from a beauty shop supply store (I think they were like $20). Along with that, they sold us a bottle of glue, a bottle of removal oil, and a shampoo that was supposed to remove the glue. The oil removed the extensions somewhat ok...The problem is I couldn''t get the glue out of my hair. These big black chunks kept coming out. I ended up washing my hair 15 - 20 times that night, and finally ended up using Dawn dish washing detergent, because it wouldn''t come out! The next day I still had it in my hair, but at least I could go to work. The glue is just nasty. Now I''m finding all of this black "tar" residue all over my body, stuck everywhere!

Can anyone give me advice as to what we are doing wrong? Are there better products or techniques we should be using?

i have had more luck in the past with the remover lotion, not the oil. the oil just made the glue form into chunky globs. for me what worked was to douse the glued areas with the lotion and let it sit on the glue for a good long while..maybe a half hour? after that, i used a wide toothed comb or something and the gunky chunky bits out and shampooed about a zillion times with a tea tree oil shampoo. other people may have better suggestions, though, i only did it once and that was enough frustration for me.

Do you happen to know what kind of glue it was? :)

you didn't do anything wrong...latex glue can be a royal pain to get out....i usually use the lotion first, leave it on for a good half hour or so, then use the oil and THEN the shampoo...sometimes i have to do another round of the oil after that to catch the residue, but even then, it usually mushrooms into a day-long event...
i've heard great things about ChryssieV (spelling?) on this board...but i think you have to be a (fabulously wealthy) professional stylist to get your hands on the stuff...

really? if it's even half as great as i've heard, it may be worth it...everyone that's tried it makes it sound like there's a genie in that bottle...

SAS. I experience the same thing with any bonding glue. Its just a temporary sensation that subsides as soon as the glue starts to set. I get a far stronger burning sensation on my head from hair colors/dyes than I feel from the ChrissyV glue. Ive used ChrissyV alot and never had anyone say that it was a painful burning that lasted. More so just a temporary sensation that only lasts a very short time.

Edited to add....I think some people have more tender scalps than others so it may be that some people will feel it more. But I think any bonding glue stings a little at first.

Oh I think you will like it compared to other bonding glues. The ease of applying and removing is awesome. I just wish it wasnt so darn expensive! If you end up getting some Ill give you a few more tips about this glue that Ive figured out! Just let me know if you buy some!

Oh I never answered your question about damage from the glue. Honestly this is probably the gentlest bonding glue you can get. As you know, removal is where serious damage can happen if its not done correctly. But the ChrissyV glue really dissolves super easy in comparison to other glue. Of course you still have the fallen trapped hairs that you have to be careful when combing it out but you dont have to fight the glue trapped in the hair too. SO its much easier on the hair in my opinion.

Overall, I liked the Chrissy V system. The burning sensation that my clients reported only lasted for a minute or so, but still, some were concerned about it.

If their hair did not get matted up, then removal is fairly easy, but don't expect to keep your nail polish on! The acetone remover takes the polish right off. I was wearing rubber gloves, which the acetone eats right through it.

I did have a few very nasty, tedious removals, but in those cases the women let the hair between the wefts get tangled. One stupid client, despite what I had told her, (5-7 weeks of wear) wore them for 17 weeks and it took me 5 hours to remove them, and I still have to cut chuncks of her hair out. I refused to do her hair after that. She was crying because she didn't want to be without her hair, so I told her to go get clip ins or find someone else to do her hair. She waited so long to get her extensions out because she is cheap and didn't believe me about what damage can be done if not cared for properly.

Anyway, it's an ok product, but after a few applications you can't get it off the top of the wefts, so it becomes bulky with layers of dried latex on the top. Also, if the hair if thin, than you can see the line latex on the top row through the hair. Overall, it's just too messy for me. I don't like glue methods.

Thanks ladies for all your input here. I myself am not a big fan of bonding methods really. I just want to be able to offer all methods, but trying to choosing the best product for the job. I saw that you can intermix her bonding colors to get the best color match. Did you ladies do that or just used the colors as is?
I have LG but was trying to find something a little gentler.

Just can't imagine leaving bonded extensions in the hair longer than 3-6 weeks max!! Don't they realize it is a temporary method only. 17 weeks takes the cake!!HeeHee
