QuoteReplyTopic: highlights from a box or salon? Posted: January 12 2000 at 4:45am
I am aware that the home coloring kits from stores are damaging to hair. Is this also true for the highlighting kits? I would like to save a buck or two on salon visits but not if it means that my hair will end up looking like straw. I am very conscious of keeping my hair healthy. Thanks for your advice! Janeah

Look at it this way......saving a 'buck or two' by doing it yourself now will probably mean spending mega bucks later to try and correct any damage or mistakes made by you. If your hair is healthy now and you want to keep it that way, go to a professional who's had the training it takes to do it right the first time. And get recommendations from people who've used colorists and had good results. This, coming from one who made that mistake of trying to save $ and do it myself.....boy was I ever sorry and did I EVER pay! That was two years ago this past November, and my hair is just NOW getting back in shape (thanks to William's great advice on the Redken Shades!! :) Good luck to you!
> Debi, Thank you so much for your message. That was all I needed to realize that the salon is the best way to go. Thanks again! I've had my hair highlighted four times. The very first time I bought a box and was reading the directions and had a question. I called the number on the box (I forget which brand it was), and much to the company's credit, the stylist rep on the phone suggested I go to a salon. I was very pleased with the results I got. Expensive? Well, yes, but I also ended up with healthy, great-looking hair.If you really don't have the money right now, I'd simply scrimp and save and do nothing until you can afford to go to a salon.Oh, if you have blonde hair and just want to go lighter, you can use "Sun-in" which works with heat -- either from the sun or from a blow dryer. But only if you have blonde hair (or use a formula for the color of hair you have).Good luck!

Witch cannot be permed over! I have seen terible things that sun in can do like turn your hair to mush! Or green! PLEASE BE CARFUL USING THAT STUFF. If I were you I wouldnt use it if your EVER planing to perm or color your hair! I have experenced many terible results from the stuff as a matter of fact the salon I worked in would refuse to perm you if you had sun in in your hair.Happy Heathy HairDiane K

I will admit that I've never permed my hair, so I haven't experienced that at all. And I've never colored it after using Sun-in, but I bet it would cause problems if you chemically altered your hair after using it.I'm just curious, though -- has anyone used Sun-in (and not permed or colored the hair afterwards) favorably? My daughter and I both have blonde hair and have used it and have had good results, but we didn't use anything afterwards, either.Good warning, though! Sometimes we find that a little of something works well, and so we add more or other processes and end up with unfavorable results. :-(
