Topic: Hacking Is A Federal Offense & Is Punishable W/ Jail Terms Posted: December 26 2002 at 11:49pm
Hi Karen & Jeff,
I was horrified to hear of the malicious and deliberate attacks that recently took place on HairBoutique.com. Through my experience as an attorney I have had a little experience prosecuting similar activities. I strongly encourage you to pursue all legal avenues to hold any hackers accountable and to make sure that they receive the maximum penalties under the current laws. The FBI is also interested in investigating hacker cases since they can often lead to destruction of government property.
Please call me if I can help HB attorneys pursue those responsible for the attacks of Christmas Eve. I would love to volunteer my services because I am appalled at the maliciousness of people that take these actions.

I work in the IT Security industry. Unless the files were saved immediately after being hacked you won`t have any evidence left on the computer to prove who hacked you and how. You need to have measures in place before you get hacked so you know what to do if you do. I would seriously consider upgrading the security on your systems. Chances are the person that hacked you is a teenager that`s looking for bragging rights but hacking into your system. If they defaced the website I can almost guarantee that`s what happened.
Good luck, hoepfully yo won`t have to deal with this again.
P.S. the firm that I worked with a couple of years ago was the company that trained the FBI, NYPD, LAPD, Military, etc on hackers.

Hi,
Thanks for your post. Jeff and I both have extensive backgrounds in the software engineering industry. We both agree that preventive measures are very important and have seen many reasons why over the past years.
Not only have we spent a large amount of money on our HB security systems over the past 5 years to try and protect the site the best we can, this is not the first time that we have experienced malicious mischief.
I am sure you will understand why I can`t elaborate about some of the things that have occurred in the past but I can tell you that we have an Internet security expert that is a consultant to HairBoutique.com and has worked with us for the past 3 years to try and plan preventive measures as well as taking actions when things like this happen. Our security guy has assured us that even though we have tried very hard to prevent attacks, things still can happen to the most prepared of locations. Which is what happened in the most recent attack. A hole existed that we thought was protected but somehow the hackers got through.
And yes....we instantly saved every file and footprint from the most recent hacking incident. We have an extensive log that we were able to capture. We have actually traced the responsible parties and are taking aggressive action against them and their ISP.
Considering the magnitude of the attacks a lot of sites would never have recovered. We are just grateful that we only lost a few hours of downtime with the loss of a few days of messageboard posts. We are also grateful we have such supportive friends & visitors like the folks here at HB.com.
