I have extremely fine hair and would really like it to look thicker, will extensions do this? I am getting to the stage where I am embarrassed to leave the house it is that bad.

I have no idea which method would be the kindest to my hair and would like them to last a few months. I would consider temporary clips or wefts if they are more suitable. I live in the London area and travel isn't really too much if an issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you x

Extensions will not cover balding spots and are not for thinning hair that is directly on top of the head, but in general extensions will make thin hair look much thicker.

I also have very thin and very fine hair too, and I have been wearing extensions now for about 15 years.  Since I'm in the extension business, I have worn just about every method on the market.

All the methods have pros and cons. And honestly, after 15 years of wear, extensions have thinned out my hair even more.  To me that's not  a big deal because my hair never looked good anyway to begin with.  But it's something that you will need to ask yourself if you want to start wearing extensions, if that is acceptable to you.  They are very addicting, when you have thin hair like I do and then all of a sudden you get this wondering thick looking hair.  It has changed my life and improved my self-esteem significantly.

As for methods, I have worn clip ins for 5 years.  After all that time of wearing them almost every day, I have found that the clips have caused breakage and spots that are even thinner on my head.  My hair is really not thick enough anymore to support the clips and the clips often cause me discomfort.

I really liked wearing the seamless wefts that were bonded into my hair.  I  didn't think these caused too much additional damage.

The shrinkies also seemed to work well for me, however the problem with any strand method on very thin hair is the tendency for the extentions to look 'stringy' - not thick enough, in the hair.  It is for this reason that I do not wear strand methods myself.

I also worn a sewn in weave for 5 years.  I started with 3 rows and then started wearing a full weave where all my hair was corn rowed away and covered by wefts.  Out of all methods, this in the one where my hair was actually in better shape when I removed the extensions.  Alas, it has it's drawbacks too.  Namely it's hotter, bulkier, and the braids on the scalp can be itchy.

So now I'm wearing wefts applied with the Protac tape.  I  am currently on  my second wearing of them.  I would have to say that the first set I removed did cause more hair loss than it should have, but I wasn't as patient as I should have been when taking them out.  For now on, I'll have someone else do the removals.  I will probably continue with this method, it's easy to do yourself.

If all else fails, I ordered myself a custom lace front wig, so if I get too bald, I'll start wearing that!

Good luck!

I've worn fake hair for 3 years. I had all over thinning from heat seals and a thumb size bald spot from sewn tracks.  My hair has grown back in but I am very careful now b/c I want to avoid permanent follicle damage.  My hair is very fine in texture (med amount) and I know that is what caused the thinning--I don't feel that it was the fault of the extensionists at all.

That said, what I do now is alternate what I wear to reduce constant stress on the same area:

2 doubled rows of 18-20" clips ons one day (my fave, of course), one single  row shoulder length the next day (feels the best), a lightweight clip on pony 1x per week for 8 hours(just at work), an occasional 3/4 cap fall (w/ creative clipping for blending in front), no fake hair on Sundays (my day off work), And I take the *fakeness* out when I am at home.

I agree w/ Metalgirl, hair ext changed my life, too.  If I do end up w/ thinner hair, it will be worth it b/c I know I will never go w/ out some form of fake hair again.

HTH!

Thank you for your advice.  am definately getting to the stage where I feel embarrassed just walking out of my house like it.

I was worried about the Protac tape, as my hair can get very greasy, I need to wash it everyday, and I donnot like the idea of losing any of my already small amount of hair.

I am also concerned about the clip-ins pulling out my hair and I like the idea of  having a permanent look. I am also useless at styling my hair, are they easy to put in?

I have had very mixed reactions about the sew-in weaves, some people say that they are easy to see and I would not like to feel uncomfortable (but the look is more important!)

Has anyone ever heard of Lucinda Ellery, a company that deals with hair loss solutions as well as fashion extensions? I don't have any bald patches and my hair has always been baby fine, but I figured they might be kinder with my hair. Probably really expensive though...

Thank you for your replies, I really want something done, but i need to figure out what would be best before  I rush into something i might regret.

well, you can wash with protac.  you just want to try to keep conditioner off of it and blow-dry it so the tape won't slip as much.  i have a pretty oily scalp, and it's slipped some, but not very much.  i found out that cutting down on conditioner helped, i do it for just the very ends.  the protac is also very gentle and cheap, so as long as you take care of the hair, you can re-apply as much as you want.

Do you get Prota installed at Salons? I would never be able to do it myself, is it available in London?

protac is incredibly easy to do yourself.  you could *almost* put them in without a mirror by feel!  i'm sure a salon could do it.  heck, you could even get a friend to help.  you just need to line up the tape w/ the part and voila!  you're done!

I agree with misslou. All you need to be able to do is make a part, put the wefts on the piece of tape, and line up the tape with the part....very simple. You really dont need to have it done professionally...any friend can help you do this method and save some money! If your uncomfortable cutting, then go to a salon that is experienced in cutting extensions to get it blended!Smile

My hair is so fine and a slight mistake would show up so well, I really want it to look natural and I would have no idea where to apply them and would probably end up losing a great mount of hair. I don't even know where to buy this from. In fact, apart from on this forum, I have never even heard of Protac. Is it availble here in London? Are there any pictures anywhere of someone putting them in?

Thank you

seamless wefts might be a good option. There is no track the hair looks as if its growing out of your scalp.

Yeah, well maybe Protac is a good idea then, but I would like someone to intsall and cut it first, so it looks professional. Anyone know of any London/Kent Salons?

Amanda looks really good, but I think she is all the way up in Nottingham. Thank you though, it proves to me that if a balding male can get them, then there is no reason why  I can't!!

Anyone checked out http://www.lucindaellery.com/  for me?  I'm thinking its maybe a bit over-priced, but I do want really good quality extensions!!

Thank you everyone!!

maybe you can have a friend install it, then go to a salon that works w/ extensions to cut it for you?  the installation really *is* easy, even though going DIY is a bit scary at first.  but cutting extension hair is a bit different from hair that's attached to your head so a pro would probably be the best way to go.

Ok.. so I know this sounds stupid, but where do I buy it from? You can get it with human hair, right? What about colour matches etc? And rough price?

I hadn't heard of it until I came on this board, is it more of an American thing?

I don't really have any friends who are good at hair styling etc, but if it really is that easy.. then maybe I should give it a go.

Also, is it problematic with greasy hair that usually needs washing every day?

Sorry.. enough questions.. Thank you
