I have extremely fine hair and would really like it to look thicker, will extensions do this? I am getting to the stage where I am embarrassed to leave the house it is that bad.

I have no idea which method would be the kindest to my hair and would like them to last a few months. I would consider temporary clips or wefts if they are more suitable. I live in the London area and travel isn't really too much if an issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you x

Extensions will not cover balding spots and are not for thinning hair that is directly on top of the head, but in general extensions will make thin hair look much thicker.

I also have very thin and very fine hair too, and I have been wearing extensions now for about 15 years.  Since I'm in the extension business, I have worn just about every method on the market.

All the methods have pros and cons. And honestly, after 15 years of wear, extensions have thinned out my hair even more.  To me that's not  a big deal because my hair never looked good anyway to begin with.  But it's something that you will need to ask yourself if you want to start wearing extensions, if that is acceptable to you.  They are very addicting, when you have thin hair like I do and then all of a sudden you get this wondering thick looking hair.  It has changed my life and improved my self-esteem significantly.

As for methods, I have worn clip ins for 5 years.  After all that time of wearing them almost every day, I have found that the clips have caused breakage and spots that are even thinner on my head.  My hair is really not thick enough anymore to support the clips and the clips often cause me discomfort.

I really liked wearing the seamless wefts that were bonded into my hair.  I  didn't think these caused too much additional damage.

The shrinkies also seemed to work well for me, however the problem with any strand method on very thin hair is the tendency for the extentions to look 'stringy' - not thick enough, in the hair.  It is for this reason that I do not wear strand methods myself.

I also worn a sewn in weave for 5 years.  I started with 3 rows and then started wearing a full weave where all my hair was corn rowed away and covered by wefts.  Out of all methods, this in the one where my hair was actually in better shape when I removed the extensions.  Alas, it has it's drawbacks too.  Namely it's hotter, bulkier, and the braids on the scalp can be itchy.

So now I'm wearing wefts applied with the Protac tape.  I  am currently on  my second wearing of them.  I would have to say that the first set I removed did cause more hair loss than it should have, but I wasn't as patient as I should have been when taking them out.  For now on, I'll have someone else do the removals.  I will probably continue with this method, it's easy to do yourself.

If all else fails, I ordered myself a custom lace front wig, so if I get too bald, I'll start wearing that!

Good luck!

I've worn fake hair for 3 years. I had all over thinning from heat seals and a thumb size bald spot from sewn tracks.  My hair has grown back in but I am very careful now b/c I want to avoid permanent follicle damage.  My hair is very fine in texture (med amount) and I know that is what caused the thinning--I don't feel that it was the fault of the extensionists at all.

That said, what I do now is alternate what I wear to reduce constant stress on the same area:

2 doubled rows of 18-20" clips ons one day (my fave, of course), one single  row shoulder length the next day (feels the best), a lightweight clip on pony 1x per week for 8 hours(just at work), an occasional 3/4 cap fall (w/ creative clipping for blending in front), no fake hair on Sundays (my day off work), And I take the *fakeness* out when I am at home.

I agree w/ Metalgirl, hair ext changed my life, too.  If I do end up w/ thinner hair, it will be worth it b/c I know I will never go w/ out some form of fake hair again.

HTH!

Thank you for your advice.  am definately getting to the stage where I feel embarrassed just walking out of my house like it.

I was worried about the Protac tape, as my hair can get very greasy, I need to wash it everyday, and I donnot like the idea of losing any of my already small amount of hair.

I am also concerned about the clip-ins pulling out my hair and I like the idea of  having a permanent look. I am also useless at styling my hair, are they easy to put in?

I have had very mixed reactions about the sew-in weaves, some people say that they are easy to see and I would not like to feel uncomfortable (but the look is more important!)

Has anyone ever heard of Lucinda Ellery, a company that deals with hair loss solutions as well as fashion extensions? I don't have any bald patches and my hair has always been baby fine, but I figured they might be kinder with my hair. Probably really expensive though...

Thank you for your replies, I really want something done, but i need to figure out what would be best before  I rush into something i might regret.

well, you can wash with protac.  you just want to try to keep conditioner off of it and blow-dry it so the tape won't slip as much.  i have a pretty oily scalp, and it's slipped some, but not very much.  i found out that cutting down on conditioner helped, i do it for just the very ends.  the protac is also very gentle and cheap, so as long as you take care of the hair, you can re-apply as much as you want.

Do you get Prota installed at Salons? I would never be able to do it myself, is it available in London?

protac is incredibly easy to do yourself.  you could *almost* put them in without a mirror by feel!  i'm sure a salon could do it.  heck, you could even get a friend to help.  you just need to line up the tape w/ the part and voila!  you're done!

I agree with misslou. All you need to be able to do is make a part, put the wefts on the piece of tape, and line up the tape with the part....very simple. You really dont need to have it done professionally...any friend can help you do this method and save some money! If your uncomfortable cutting, then go to a salon that is experienced in cutting extensions to get it blended!Smile

My hair is so fine and a slight mistake would show up so well, I really want it to look natural and I would have no idea where to apply them and would probably end up losing a great mount of hair. I don't even know where to buy this from. In fact, apart from on this forum, I have never even heard of Protac. Is it availble here in London? Are there any pictures anywhere of someone putting them in?

Thank you

seamless wefts might be a good option. There is no track the hair looks as if its growing out of your scalp.

I use protac and the protac shows less for me and i have thin hair on top, also less damage to my hair...........not to mention I am able to put it in myself per sherrie's demo and it is so easy!!!!!!

Yeah, well maybe Protac is a good idea then, but I would like someone to intsall and cut it first, so it looks professional. Anyone know of any London/Kent Salons?

Amanda looks really good, but I think she is all the way up in Nottingham. Thank you though, it proves to me that if a balding male can get them, then there is no reason why  I can't!!

Anyone checked out http://www.lucindaellery.com/  for me?  I'm thinking its maybe a bit over-priced, but I do want really good quality extensions!!

Thank you everyone!!

maybe you can have a friend install it, then go to a salon that works w/ extensions to cut it for you?  the installation really *is* easy, even though going DIY is a bit scary at first.  but cutting extension hair is a bit different from hair that's attached to your head so a pro would probably be the best way to go.

Ok.. so I know this sounds stupid, but where do I buy it from? You can get it with human hair, right? What about colour matches etc? And rough price?

I hadn't heard of it until I came on this board, is it more of an American thing?

I don't really have any friends who are good at hair styling etc, but if it really is that easy.. then maybe I should give it a go.

Also, is it problematic with greasy hair that usually needs washing every day?

Sorry.. enough questions.. Thank you

you can get it from sherrie or elvira for super cheap:
http://www.beaucouphair.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=PROFLEX
http://hairextensions101.com/Site/Store-675.html

i 1st ordered only 5 strips from elvira (beaucoup), and cut the strips in 1/2 longways.  i only ended up using 4 of the strips this way.  i ordered a 10 pack from sherrie so i'll have many future installs worth!  (sherrie's hair101 site says no int'l shipping, but she just means that for liquids like the velvasil and liquid gold).

it's up to you whether you use human or synth, both have their ups and downs.  i'm a synth gal, so i can't recommend any human, but i love the wawa from hair101 (it matches my thick/glassy asian hair texture), and i hear amazing things about the http://www.plastikhaar.ch/shop/ - plastikhaar (which i understand to be finer like caucasian hair).

as far as color matching goes, you can either send in a sample of your own hair to one of these ladies (posting a picture will never guarantee that they'll see the real color due to monitor variations), OR go to a grocery store, go to the hair dye aisle, and find a box that has your hair color, and tell these ladies what it is.

for example: dear sherrie, my hair is the same color as clairol hydrience #48 "sable cove.  what color most closely matches it?

as for greasy hair.  i "thought" that i had greasy hair until i started doing extensions.  then i discovered i was using too much shampoo (which dried everything and convinced my scalp to produce more oil) and too much conditioner (on top of the already hyper oil production).

now i wash my scalp every 3 days (or as needed) w/ just watered down shampoo to clean it.  the hair itself i wash maybe 1/week if it's dirty because the scalp oil and sweat can't go beyond the bonds.  brushing it regularly removes any dust and stuff.  and my real hair has never felt/looked so healthy because i'm not using product, drying it out then greasing it down w/ 'poo and conditioner.  i only use a hair dryer to dry the protac after washing, the rest air dries.

and to put it in, they don't need to know how to style hair.  test them, get a piece of paper and draw a long line on it, hand them a strip of scotch tape, if they can stick the tape to the paper along the line, they're golden.  i can do it and i have nerve damage on my left hand and tiny mirrors!   Big smile  (my boyfriend helped me to center the tape on the back of my head, though)

oh wait!!!  i forgot about my human hair samples from sherrie!!  she sent me a sample of jetset hair that is so fine and soft!  it's amazing stuff, so healthy, and is as soft as a bunny's belly.  i kid you not, this stuff is SOFT!!  ask her about it.  her name is sherrie215 in these forums.

also: you're hair is fine for extensions!  i was expecting to see bare scalp through your hair!  i was worried that i might give bad advise!  you're hair is a decent length  and the ends aren't fried so it should be able to blend in well.  i would say go with any of the weft methods, though.  strand-by-strand has a habit of peeking through thin hair unless it's fusion, and if your hair is delicate, then fusion done by the wrong person could hurt and thin your hair further.  weft also lies flatter.  if you do protac, i would go very high up the head.  i'd guess go no further up than the top of your eyebrows or else the tapes might show.

just my two cents, sorry for the long post.  i like to try and help people.  Embarrassed

So do Seamless wefts get applied using Protac tap too? Or am I getting confused?

This Jetst hair sounds really good!

I will search for a colour that matches my own... Will I need to get it shipped from America? Or is it available here? I don't mind either way, as long as there isn't a massive postage charge!

Thank you

Hey!
I have very similar hair to you, very very very thin!  It has been my whole life and I knew without extensions, it wasn't going to ever look better!
I can offer you my experience with some of the different methods that I have tried and how they worked in my hair.

The first couple installs were done with shrinkies.  They were ok half way up my head but when I reached a certain point they would start poking out of my thin hair and becoming visable, a big no-no!  So eventually, I moved on from them and decided against any strand by strand method.

Then I went to pro-tac.  This gives great amounts of volume and length, however they didn't hold well in my hair.  My hair gets very greasy at the roots and I was daily.

Now, the final method which I still use and works like a charm, wefts and liguid gold.  Super easy to do and no slipping!  Hides perfectly in my hair too!

Goodluck and keep us posted!

Yes, I am very concerned about the greasiness of my hair, so maybe this liquid gold might be an idea, where do you get it all from? Will it ship to London?

Also how long does it stay in for??

Thanks pink!

honey, you could stick yarn and rosemary to your head with protac if you wanted to! ;)

once you determine your hair color, make a new post asking for help to determine what type to buy.  be sure to mention the color and to post your pics again so they'll see the texture.  try to decide whether you want human hair (more expensive and needs TLC but softer) or synth (cheaper, never get split ends, minimum styling time, a little rougher texture) so the gals will have a better idea how to help you.

remember: DO YOUR RESEARCH into any of the hair, read the old posts and see what people had to say about different brands, and keep in mind that the hair that one person loves, another won't.  read why they like one over another to help you determine how much time and energy you're willing to put into taking care of your hair.

Ok.. I will post again once i've determined my hair colour!

I'm fine with taking a little more time to care for it, but I would like the more natural softer feel and look of real human hair. I would like the best quality possible, but would like it to match my very fine strands (which are quite soft and shiny) as much as possible. I don't want to risk it looking fake at all.. even though I'm sure everyone I know will wonder how my hair started looking so good all of a sudden!!!

Bearing in mind I'm not too worried about lengthening my hair, I would just like it to look a little thicker, how much would I need to buy? I would just like an average cost (including the difference between fake and real hair!)

Can you use liquid gold with seamless wefts? Or is that limited to protac?

I know i'm asking a lot of questions, which probably sound a bit stupid and obvious to you guys, but I really have no idea about it all and I want to make sure I make the right choices before i take the plunge!

Thank you misslou for all your advice! x

primo human hair could run you $200+ USD for 4 oz.  most length AND volume installs take 8 oz.  it's better to have too much hair than too little.  nothing sucks worse than only having 1/2 head installed and wait for more hair to ship.

the protac stuck well to my greasy hair, BUT i made sure to wash my hair twice w/ dish soap.  this took all the oil off of the hair.  once the tape is on and coated w/ dry hair, the oil takes a while to penetrate and loosen it.  i installed May 6, washed 2-3 times.  i have a tiny bit of slipping on a top row, but i think that's from brushing my hair roughly in the hot-hot texas sun.  i think the heat softened the tape while i was pulling.

if anything goes wrong w/ protac, just pat some goo gone or acetone on it, gently pull it out taking care not to pull your own hair, and you're done.  if it looks bad, then you can remove it and try something else.  you're hair is undamaged, and so is your fancy extension hair.

i thought about liquid gold when i was getting started, but it's so messy that went with microrings and protac instead.

Yeah, I don't think I could handle anything messy, I need to keep it simple!

Do you use a mixture then? Protac for the main body and Microrings round the face or something??

Yeah I won't argue there.....LG can get VERY messy!

i did strand-by-strand microrings for my 1st ever install.  it took me all weekend, my shoulders hurt, but they looked great.  my mistake: i used super-cheap bss hair that died a horrible, early death and used plain microrings from dr.locks which started slipping out after the 1st week.  i tried to do damage control by putting in wefts w/ the rings where my strands fell out, but it was a losing battle.

i went for a week w/ just my real hair and decided i was addicted to extensions.  i asked a bunch of stupid questions (post after post filled with stupid questions!) and finally determined i wanted to try protac and wawa.  (everyone was so nice and helpful!)

and i also figured, hey, what's the worst that can happen?  i don't like it and remove it?  bah!  wawa was cheap, but well recommended, so i gave it a go.  now i'm a wawa convert.  i only wish it came in "funky" colors as well.

and the protac is easy as pie, goes in fast, comes out almost as fast.  it, too, is cheap, so there was no fear of experimenting hurting my bank account.

hi femme, my hair is fine like yours is and ive been having amanda do my extension with shrin***s and bohyme for a year or so now and ive never looked back,i have long gorgeous hair that i could only have dreamed of before extensions!! i have no damage to my own hair from the extensions and its highly coloured and bleached at that! i find it easier having a strand by strand method rather than wefts as i like to tie my hair up in lots of different styles but if you would prefer to have your hair down mostly if wearing extensions then maybe wefts are probably your best option. go for remi bohyme hair though as its the best!!! i never use anything else!

Shrin**es are a type of bonding method. They look like clear plastic tubes-you put abit of your extension hair and some of your natural hair through the tube then you apply heat to the tube and it shrinks around the hair (gets tighter) and holds your hair in place. Some shri**ies come with an adhesive lining on the inside with helps them to hold the hair even more. Hope you understood all that lol.
My suggestion is that you find a salon to install them for you, and just bring along the hair and whichever bonding method you want to use (hair is WAY cheaper off the internet for me it is anyway). That way youre just paying for their time, which with wefts-shouldnt take too long. You would have to make sure they know what theyre doing though (alot of extentionists only specialise in one or two types of attachment methods-usually fusion/glue).
Goodluck =)

Thank you

I think this will be my problem, I can't seem to locate any salons that aren't just racoon. I'm still not sure which way to go with though, I never really wear my hair up, but with nice thick hair I might want to experiement, so maybe a strand technique might be better than a weft, but keeping damage down to a minimum is a priority.

Anyone know any good places that deliver to UK?

Thanks again guys xx

my hair is as fine as yours I had fusion for years but it did cause some thinning I now use protac I do it myself as I find it very comfortable to wear. My hair is just below shoulder length and I wear either 18" or 26" depending on what I feel like! I am also a hairdressing student and when I started nobody believed it was extensions!! so it does look very natural I think fine hair blends very well with extension hair.

I to have very thin hair

and I now wear a topper - well actually i buy wigs and turn them into toppers witha pair of scissors then attach using micro links tubes  (so like extensions I wear it 24/7

I can put it in myself in a fraction of the time that it takes to put in extensions

and I get the thickness and volume where I want it - on top

as an added bonus - because the topper covers the bulk of my natural hair, I now always have that 'just spent a fortune at the colorist' look - its amazing the variety of colors and hilites/gradients etc you can get with wigs

Ive used both human hair and synthetic - currently I am loving the shake and go styling of synthetics.
