> Julia,I'm sorry to hear about your perm mishap. If you want to try to keep your hair long, have you checked with a hair stylist about possibly using a mild hair relaxer on your "frizzy horse hair"? It may be an option. If that's out, and your only other option is to cut. You can email this guy your picture. If you don't have a scanner, Kinkos will put your picture on a disc for just a few bucks. For no charge, he'll email it back to you with different haircuts/styles. This should give you some idea of what you'll look like before you cut. He says it's all confidential. But, of course, I've never used his service. I hope this helps, good luck.Related Link:try before you buy

I need advice> Julia, you should be able to consult with a professional hair care person who can recommend conditioners or other products that will moisturize your hair and start the process of bringing it back to its original texture. Shampoos for oily hair will also help. The perm may have irritated your scalp which is another reason for the extra oil. I know that it is hard to shampoo every day if your hair is hard to dry and you have to work. Perhaps you can wear it up on the days you don't shampoo? If you hair has been damaged by the perm, you could also benefit from a trim, especially a split end trim. If you are thinking about a cut, you can start slowly and see how your hair responds and how you look. If your hair is badly damaged by the perm, you will have to cut it. You have to weigh the cost of caring for your long hair now vs. the risk of a shorter style that you might not like but that will result in healthier, easier to care for hair. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

Julia: I had long damaged hair a couple of years ago and made the decision to cut it off. My hair was quite long. First off, may I first tell the ones who have long hair to get only "long hair friendly" perms, if you perm at all. Wetting the hair and braiding it gives the same effect, I have done both. Bain de Terre has a very easy going perm that does little damage, tho they do not last as long. But back to the damage. After finding this site and learning about the Aveda line, I went to the salon to try it out. The stylist there upon learning my story told me he wished I had given the Curessence a try before cutting it all off. Until finding this site tho, I had no knowledge of the product line.. I sure wish I had. He said it well may have saved my hair and let me tell you..the stuff works. Go buy a bottle of it and get a shower cap.. slather on the Curessence, let it sit for hours... rinse and see if there is a possiblility of keeping your long hair. If you hair is super damaged, do this regime 2-3 times a week. I know from perm experience that they will relax after awhile. Give it a month or so and the perm will back down quite alot. In the meantime, baby your hair with some Curessence. The stuff is like medicine, believe me.. If you do decide to cut, make sure that is what you want.. remember it takes years of patience and caring to grow your hair. It only takes a few seconds to be rid of it with scissors. Take some time to try to save it with the Aveda products. best regards... Cher> UP until August, i had beautiful long hair.> then I made the CRAZY decision to perm it. Cher is definitely right about the Aveda Curessence - it's wonderful stuff! I wish I had discovered it when I was younger and had my nightmare perm. The other suggestion I have is this - massage your scalp before you wash your hair. Apply jojoba oil to the ends of your hair and detangle it gently. You can leave this on for a while if you want, for extra conditioning. Wash your scalp, rather than your hair - when you rinse the shampoo off, it will also rinse away the excess jojoba oil, leaving just enough to keep your hair soft as it dries. It may take a few tries to find the right balance, but believe me, it's worth it. Then condition your hair and rinse that out as usual, and let your hair air dry.The other major problem with perms is that they make it very difficult to detangle hair. Try doing it gently with your fingers, rather than a comb or brush - a lot of the dryness and tangling could be due to breakage from being rought with it (a problem I had when I had a perm, years ago). You can't get rid of the breakage except by trimming, but first you need to assess what the situation really is. If a lot of the ends are split, get the ends trimmed. If not, just spend a few minutes each day trimming the splits themselves.Of course, if you want short hair, that's another story - in that case, go for it. However, it is not a requirement - even if your hair seems damaged, it may be possible to recover if you take care of it well.Good luck!Laura Jane lswanson@sunflower.bio.indiana.edu

I need advice> ---------------------------------------------- DON'T cut it. You will only have crazy short hair and you will probably hate it even more. Condition the hell out of it and take the advice of a pro (I'm not one, but I'll asure you that they will agrre with this) on the type of conditioning to use. If you do decide to get it cut, take no more than 1/3 off or less at any one time or this frizz mess might get worse. HAIR GROWS 1/2 INCH A MONTH ON AVERAGE. You could try hair supplements, but they will not increase the rate that much. Wait at least 6 months before you do anything like trying to get all the perm cut out (your hair will be 3-4 inches long if it is all cut out!!!). Perms have a tendancy to go a bit flat after a few months.Hang in there.
:)
