Could anyone please explain scientifically why straight hair suddenly decides to curl itself? I thought to-curl-or-not was predetermined in the genes even before the hair grew out of the scalp but apparently, my hair curls in many places but is straight in others! I am pulling out individual healthy curls from my roots to get a sleek smooth look. Is this wise and can I do anything to prevent hair from becoming curly?

As I got older, my hair grew in curly (as in looking like a spiral perm). I used to have straight hair and used to perm it. One time my hair stylist asked me why I wanted to get another perm, because my hair was coming in curly! He also told me that the texture of your hair can change as you get older.

I never permed my hair to curl it. Rather, I tried straightening it and it curled even more! I wonder if it is the hair's natural defense system to chemical straighteners! I have heard many people say the weight of long hair will straighten any curls. yeah, I suppose hair texture changes as we age, but why? (I woldn't consider myself that old yet :))

Have no idea why hair texture might change as we age (I'm only 35!), maybe it has to do with hormones. I've heard of people that, once they give birth, their hair texture changes from curly to straight. My hair actually gets curlier the longer it gets. The length has not straightened out the curls.
