QuoteReplyTopic: Thick, coarse wavy hair Posted: January 12 2000 at 3:44am
Please Help,I have incredibly thick, coarse hair. It also has a natural wave which prevents my hair from hanging straight. I am looking for a length/style which will suit this type of hair. If it isn't cut correctly, it looks bushy/frizzy. If it is all one length (especially around the face) it just hangs in a "heavy" mass. Can anyone give me a suggestion as to what to do with this head of hair? Thanks!

Yup, I have the same problem too, but have learnt to live with it. My tips are specifically:-1) Never try layering this kind. You will end up with bushes which kink outwards, either short/long layering applies. the best is to leave it all same-length. Sure, your stylist will say layering removes weight from the hair, making it thinner, and that is correct. But since you have wavy hair too, the layers will curl dreadfully, (unless you like curly hair, then it's OK to layer) and you need to brush your hair to keep it DOWN all day.2) One-length long hair will add weight to your ends and pull the waves down making them look straighter, but don't expect poker straight!3) use a good moisturizing conditioner.4) i know the heavy mass look around your face, but you've got 2 options for this kind of hair, either have it very short or very long. When it is chin-lnegth like in-between, that's where you get the heavy look.I do speak from experience with all these advice :)Another point is, straightening won't help. it is temporary, but if your hair's stubborn, you'll see the waves again in no time!
I feel your pain girls. My hair too is quite wavy and course...it's very difficult to cut and like you said, looks shaggy or frizzy if cut incorrectly. Well, you may think that I don't have the same problems, being a guy, but sometimes it's worse, cause at least you get to put your hair back in a ponytail, or whatever; I don't. Anyway,it's like we're in the middle: not straight hair, and not curly enough to be curly. I've tried straighteners and found that the effects simply don't last. Also I found that they make my hair wiry at the end of the day and only work with a hair dryer. My advice is to get a good shampoo and conditioner first of all. Second of all, when you do get a cut, listen to yourself, not your stylist. You know your hair better than he/she does, and dont' let them talk you into doing something that you KNOW won't work.Anyway, after saying all this, one day I was getting my hair cut and the staff was amazed at my waves and questioned where I had it "done"..of course I replied that it was just the way my hair was. They also asked where I had my highlights done, but again, I didn't have them "done" anywhere.. I guess I was spending years battling with my wavy hair, trying to make it straight like so many of the models in the magazines, and I failed to notice my own beauty. Anyway, I guess I'm trying to say that we always want something we dont' have. So many people with straight hair get permanent waves and perms etc to make it curly, and people with curly hair, well they use straighteners to get it straight. Short people where stacked shoes to make themselves look taller, tall people wear flats to appear shorter. We're never happy with the way we look. However, now that I've let my hair go natural, I've developed a whole new appreciation for myself. I receive comments on my hair wherever I go and am thankful for being me. :)
