Just curious -- if someone wore a wig (that has adequate ventilation) ~8-10 hours a day, would it harm the hair growing underneath, if one is only wearing the wig until the hair grows out?

I've thought for awhile of getting a nice, long haired wig to wear until my own hair recouperates from a bad perm. I've been treating my hair to TLC and it has improved. The problem is that it is still quite short from having the sad, dry, damaged ends whacked off.I am hoping someone knowledgeable will respond - as I too am wondering if it will hurt or harm my hair. I am assuming that it will be good for my hair, as it won't be exposed to any elements and will be dry when I put the hair in the wig. Thanks!

Hi Kay,Sorry about your bad perm. :-(This is what I've been told -- When at home or when you really don't care how you look, leave the wig off so the scalp has breathing room. Most wigs today have good ventilation, though, so wearing one for 8-10 hours isn't a problem. And, as you said, the hair will have no exposure to the sun, and since you'll be wearing a wig, you won't need to use a hair dryer or curling iron. So, you could wash your hair at night, let it air dry, and in the morning, obviously the hair will look terrible but who cares -- you'll have on the wig! {grin}Also, I was told that frequent massage to the scalp helps stimulate growth. I do that twice a day, and my hair is growing fairly well, I'm pleased to say!Oh, another thing -- I'd recommend one with a monofilament top -- that way the part in the hair looks very real. Also, if you have a small head, be sure to ask about "petite" sizes. The regular ones are actually quite large. If you'd care to contact me via e-mail, please feel free.

Hell Jena!!Thanks a bunch!! I've been wondering and the wig people said there would be no harm to natural hair, but I always wonder if one can trust them...afterall, they are trying to sell, sell, sell!!Your information was most helpful and greatly appreciated!!Thanks again!!Good luck with your hair!!
