My cousin has natural medium brown hair with reddish highlights. When I recently visited her, she had attempted to lighten her hair with store-bought hair dye; it was L'Oreal Blondessence in Lightest Ash Blonde Level 10, (she had used that color a couple of times in the last six months), but her hair turned more of a light, bright orange-type of red. She hates it, and doesn't know why her hair didn't go more blonde instead of orange after she used the product a couple of times thinking that since it was getting much lighter, it would dial in to the blonde color eventually. At this point, without bleaching her hair, is there a way she can correct the orange hue of her color to a more yellow/blonde hue with some other product/products available on the market?- she has a Sally's nearby. Thanks for any help.

> Rana,William has a section about hair-coloring tips on this site, so you may want to do a search on that.My suggestion to your cousin, however, is to go to a professional to get the color corrected. Her hair has already been through a lot from the attempts to go blonde. Doing more color work at home will continue to be damaging, and, depending on the condition of her hair at this point, may even cause some breakage.Going into a professional salon, and, ideally, seeing a colorist, is the best remedy. Unfortunately, this is also the most expensive option. But it's bound to yield the best results, too.godd luck! :)

check out:http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip095.htmthese are william's hair coloring tips. there's a section in there about getting "orange hair." i believe this describes both how it happens as well as how to correct it. Hope this is more helpful!

I have read your hair color tips as Silvie suggested, but from what I read it spoke more about how to avoid orange hair to begin with not how to correct it once it has happened already. Any suggestions? My cousin cannot afford going to a professional at this time. This is her situation:My cousin has natural medium brown hair with reddish highlights. When I recently visited her, she had attempted to lighten her hair with store-bought hair dye; it was L'Oreal Blondessence in Lightest Ash Blonde Level 10, (she had used that color a couple of times in the last six months), but her hair turned more of a light, bright orange-type of red. Thanks for any help.

> She can't afford to go to a professional at this time,> (has two small children), so any at-home suggestions> would be appreciated. thanksTo Rana;Re your cousins hair (the dreaded orangehead look!).This is a long shot without being able to see, feel or otherwise evaluate its condition.. to counteract the orange base use a color with a blue to blue green base to be opposite of the base color in about a level 7 or 8 ash blonde or light ash brown to tone down the orange. Be sure to carefully strand test and completely dry and check the condition of the colored hair for breakage, gummy appearence or any other abnormal behavior. The timing will most likly be about 2/3 of the normal timing because of the more 'open porosity' of the previous colored hair versus 'virgin uncolored hair.'good luck and I apologize for taking so long to respond, but due to the volume of mail I recieve and time limitations I can only do so much. Please research the archives for my response to the perming questions a few days ago and review the hair tests that I described for references as to what shape your hair is in.william
