QuoteReplyTopic: Shampoo everyday or not? Cold or warm water best? Posted: January 12 2000 at 5:51am
Hi Everyone :)Okay, I have a couple more questions before I call it a night and hit the hay. LOL! Boy, do I LOVE coming here! :)I'm curious. How often do you shampoo? Is it really bad to shampoo your hair every day? Also, when you shampoo is it best to use cold or warm water? What works best for you? I'd love to hear. Thanks!Because I have an oily scalp, most of the time I shampoo everyday. However I'm trying to cut back a little because I think it's causing my hair to become a little too dry. Also, when I shampoo I hear the colder the water you use, the better, but I usually use slightly warm water. Thanks!!Maria :)Related Link:Maria In Mass

Hello. I only shampoo my hair twice a week. I don't think it is necessarily bad to shampoo everyday. It all depends on what type of hair you have. Some people feel much better when they wash everyday, but it isn't necessary for me. I have curly hair, so each morning I wet and condition my hair, but skip the shampoo. Then, twice a week, I shampoo and use a deep conditioner. This has worked great for me so far and my hair's condition seems to be improving every day. Also, I use lukewarm water while I shampoo and shower, then I do my final rinse with cool water. This is not necessarily better for the hair, but it shocks the cuticle closed and makes the hair look a bit smoother and shinier. The colder the water, the tighter the cuticle will close, but I haven't been able to stand under frigid water while I rinse my conditioner out. So I just make the water as cold as I can comfortably stand it.Hope I've answered your questions. :)
Hi, Maria!I do agree with Jessica. How frequently you shampoo really depends on your hair type. My hair is normal to dry these days being closer to the normal side. My hair is thick and heavy, basically straight with a wave. In the winter, I shampoo my hair usually once a week, maybe two. In the summer, it's usually twice per week. This summer, which was extremely hot, I shampooed as often as three times per week due to my sweating.I shampoo my hair in tepid to warm water. The first shampoo is definitely warmer to draw the dirt and debris off my scalp. I rinse the bulk of the conditioner in warm water, then do a cool rinse to close the cuticle, as Jessica stated. With your oily scalp, Maria, have you tried using apple cider vinegar? Simply dampen several cotton balls with apple cider vinegar and apply to your scalp before shampooing. Your scalp should be wet with the apple cider vinegar. This may help cut down on the number of shampoos you are doing and consequently drying out the body of your hair. Another thing which you can do, is to use either an apple cider vinegar rinse (3tablespoons to a pint of distilled water) or herbal rinse after you shampoo concentrating on the scalp, letting a bit drip down to the body of your hair. Concentrate on the scalp, however. Personally, I say start with my first suggestion. It works for most:) Your frequent shampooing may have thrown the balance of your scalp off, ergo the excess oil.Bye for now,JadeP.S. I am sorry that more people did not respond to your request for suggestion on Aubrey products at naturallycurly.com. I hope that you were able to pull recent messages from the archives for assistance. Off the bat from what you have described, I would suggest that you start with the J.A.Y. shampoo and the Jojoba and Aloe Conditioner. The J.A.Y. will balance that scalp quickly. Concentrate your shampooing on the scalp and let some suds drip to the body of your hair. With the Jojoba and Aloe Conditioner, concentrate on the body of your hair and add just enough to cover the scalp area, but don't overdo it. If you feel that the Jojoba and Aloe conditioner is too rich for you hair, try either the GPB (I love the stuff, but remember, if you have a problem with protein making your hair hard, alternate with another) or the Swimmers'conditioner. Be sure to e-mail Aubrey at AubreyOrg@aol.com to see if you can get some samples. NOt the try-me-outs, smaller samples:)Watch for the Aubrey Organics survey over at naturallycurly.com.Let me know how you and the hair are doing:)> Okay, I have a couple more questions before I call it> a night and hit the hay. I still find shampooing everyday the best way for me.My hair is in excellent condition and shines really well.My hair's oilyness is also controlled well.Use a DAILY shampoo(preferably one that stimulates and deep cleanses) for oily hair. The aim is too clean excess oil without damaging the hair. This is to prevent the hair follicles from being clogged with excess sebum. You might experience dullness, hair loss or even itchness because the nutrients can't reach your hair properly.I use Aveda's Rosemary Mint shampoo.Oh yes...the shampoo should stimulate the scalp because you need the blood vessels in your scalp to keep going.Always condition the oily scalp with a light conditioner that restores the acidity and also one that purifies (cleanses or stimulate) the scalp. This step might or might not work for you.Do regular scalp massages too.I'm going to get the Pure-fume shampoo because of the deep cleansing benefits and my hair is kinda coarse too.The apple cider vinegar should be left on your scalp for about 15 minutes to 3 hours. You can do this once a week to everyday. The vinegar will stimulate and deep cleanse by unclogging the follicles and restore the acidity.I don't do it anymore because it stinks badly.
Hi :)Thanks, everyone for answering my questions! I really appreciate it and as always, you've been very helpful! This weekend I experimented a little and tried going a day without shampooing. The verdict? It may be good for my hair, but I don't think it's good for my scalp. Unfortanately it seems whenever I try to skip a day and not shampoo, my scalp becomes very itchy, feels bad, and breaks out in the little red itchy bumps. I guess I really need to shampoo everyday. It's kind of frustrating cos I also have the tendency to develop the little red itchy bumps not only if I skip a day shampooing but if I a)Use products with too much conditioner and b)Use certain shampoos and conditioners with certain ingrediants in them (To give you an example, recently I tried Rosemary Mint Shampoo by Aveda and that caused a break out too. I'm guessing it was from the spearmint and peppermint in the shampoo. I heard some people are sensitive to those two ingrediants and I guess I'm one of them. I've also broken out from Suave and Pantene Pro V also.) Oh well. I'm hoping when my Aubrey Organic products arrive later this week sometime and I began using them, they will help my scalp and hair become more balanced. Stay tuned for the next episode of "As Maria's Hair/Scalp Turns" LOL!Thanks everyone!! I really appreciate it!!*Hugs to everyone*Maria :)Related Link:Maria In Mass

Hi, Maria,After much experimentation on this subject for me, I have decided that for me everyday is best. I shampoo, condition, and leave-in condition. In the winter, I usually do it at night because I don't like to blow dry much (except just to remove some initial post-wash moisture), and I don't want to go out with semi wet hair. In the summer months, I do it in the morning. I looks and feels better to me.Regards,Clare> Hi Everyone :)> Okay, I have a couple more questions before I call it> a night and hit the hay. LOL!
