Hi,

Just found this site while surfing. I am in a dilema. I have not seen my hairdresser in almost 2 years, growing my hair to about 2" past my waist.

I need to do something with the ends. They are starting to split & I do not want to get them cut. Are there any products out there that can fix this?

My friends & BF do not notice because my hair is very thick & has a wave to it, but about 6" up from the end it comes out when I brush.

Please help!

TY

The only sure cure for split ends is to cut them or they will travel up the entire hair shaft. A very good technique that will remove the split ends without losing length is to twist the hair in small sections (about an inch or less). The split ends will then stick out. Using a small pair of scissors, trim the splits just above them to keep them from spreading up the shaft. Twist in both directions to be sure you get them all. An excellent natural conditioner that will work wonders on dry ends is Monoi Oil. You may be able to find it at your local health food store. The Long Hair Lovers site (http://www.bbahneycomm.com/longhairlovers/monoioil.html) sells an excellent version and has very good tips on growing your hair. Good luck and happy growing.

Thanks for the info! I am going to start off by trimming an inch. Should I condition first & them trim, or cut it first & then condition.

This Monoi looks like suntan oil but I will try it!

Please get a second opinion. Six inches seems like a ton to hack off at once. Why not send e-mail to Karen, who has gorgeous long hair and is very knowledgable about all things dealing with hair. Long hair is awesome. Cherish what you have.

Thanks for your interest & concern. I tried that Monio Oil & it did not do much. We are going to try it with heat & if that does not work than I going to have my friend who is a stylist cut it it tonight.

I LOVE my hair & will not be going short ever, but I have not had it cut for about 15 months. I have grown it at least a foot of length in that time, so I will not be traumatized. It is still going to be past my waist. I doubt anyone will notice it that much, except hopefully to say how much better it looks. It is really looking ratty on the ends & as much as I love long hair I do not want to be like one of those middle aged with grey split fried dead hair half way up my back. That LHL site has alot of unhealthy looking hair & some beautiful stunning hair as well. I want it long but not at that price.

For the new year I will resolve to get trims every 3 months or so & never let it get this dead looking ever again & take care of it.

TTFN

I think you have the right attitude. I see girls with long hair all the time that is real need of a trim and a conditioning treatment. Long, healthy hair is the goal not just long. Regular trims (and I do mean "trims") is important to keep long hair healthy. As mentioned earlier, I too have found the technique of twisting the hair to remove splits to be effective but it really doesn`t replace regular trims. I`m sorry to hear you didn`t see good results with the Monoi Oil. I started using it recently and am impressed with the results. If you have a Sally`s nearby, you may want to try Mermade by L`Oreal. It is an excellent deep conditioner and can be used with or without a heatcap. Good luck and I hope you see spectacular results.

I always condition first and then trim. Gives me a better idea of just where the damage is. Trimming an inch at a time, unless the split ends have traveled very far up the hair shaft, is usually good too. I hope you don`t have to cut too much!!
