Ok, from what I've read in posts and heard from my stylists all store bought hair dye eventually fades to red because of the peroxide in them. I can't afford a salon color so is there any brand that fades less than others or is there a certain shampoo to use that prevents the fading? My hair is usually medium brown with red highights and I try to color it more brown to get the red out but every time I do this it fades to a reddish brown in a few weeks and looks awful.

ALLL hair color fades..period. You can minamize this by going to a pro. Or you can tinker with your color a bit. What makes your hair turn red is each time you put color on your hair (the store stuff) it lifts lots of natural color out of your hair, now keep in mind, brown to dark blonde hair has much red and or orange under tones, the color you put on lifts out your natural brown down to redish orange, THEN puts in your hair IT'S brown pigment, which falls out from under your OVER exploded cutical and goes down the sink each and every time you wash your hair, more so when you use moisturizers becouse most of them displace the color molicules. SOOO, one solution would be ( other than seeing a pro, would be to take some of the punch out of your developer by diluting it with distealed(spell check) water. Try pouring out one third of the developer and replacing with the water. If your greys( Im assuming) are tough to color this may not work, but most of the time it will. But you will never get the results of exact coloring done by a colorist, I've rambled on enough!

Would semi-perm colors help since they just deposit color and don't lift color out?
