I think they're for smoothing out the ends, but not for straightening exactly. I've never used one, though. Maybe someone else knows... :)

Jenny- I suggest sleeping with the hair in a braid every night. It really reduces tangling!

Also, yes, you can blast synth with a high-heat curling iron. You can even use some weak curling or flat-irons on it. Just nothing ceramic- those get too hot. If you're unsure about a heat tool, you can just test it on a scrap piece of hair. And steam is always fine.
