I`m tired of dying my hair, and I`m looking into my alternatives. Unfortunately, the stylists I`ve spoken with have given completely different options, and I`m not sure of what would be the best.

1. Stripping the dye, then dying it back to the correct color.

2. Going a shade darker to get the red out, then highlighting streaks to match the roots.

3. One stylist said he could fix it with dying. I`m reluctant to believe this, but I admittedly don`t know much about corrective coloring.
My hair was just between dark blonde/light ash brown. I`ve since dyed it at least seven times with semi-permanents, and it`s currently a medium burgandy, sort of violet/auburn (with around three inches of roots, sigh.)

I don`t want to damage my hair too badly, or cut it above shoulder length. I spent most of junior high with unruly boyish hair, and as a result, I`m awfully proud of having it waist length and under control. ;)

Any advice on fixing this one would be greatly appreciated, and whichever option I go with, I`ll keep you guys posted.

Don`t srip the hair; it will destroy the condition of your hair. Since you already have three inches of roots, I would recommend just putting highlights in your natural color over the current color. Don`t try dying it darker, though. Dark dyes put on light hair tend to really stick. Since the dyes were semi-permanent, the hair should gradually become less red as you wash it, especially if you use a clarifying shampoo such as Neutrogena or Bumble & Bumble. Dying alone won`t work. When you put a dye over a darker color, the hair won`t get lighter; it will only get darker. The only way to get the hair lighter is to use bleach. If you do highlighting, it isn`t as damaging because the bleach is on all the hair. So that`s what I would recommend. In the future, if you want to change your hair color, always go lighter than your natural color never darker. I learned this the hard way as well. Dark even semi-permanent colors are hard to get out of light hair. If you color your hair and it`s too light, it`s relatively simple to dye it back to brown.
