Sorry to hear about your wife`s problem. The word "melted" concerns me a bit. Has she has a chemical service like a perm or color? That may be the cause of tangles and what appears to be extreme dryness. My advice is to condition, condition, condition. A good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, a leave-in conditioner, and regular deep conditioning treatments are called for (I can recommend the Edwin Paul products sold on this site. They are high quality and reasonably priced.) Once the condition of her hair improves, you will be able to determine if a cut is necessary. If the tangles are due to split ends, the only solution is a cut. However, if they are due to dry hair, things should improve dramatically without losing a lot of length. Also, gently comb out the tangles with a wide tooth comb with smooth edges (any rough spots on the comb will grab and break the hair). Hope this helps and hang in there - things will improve.
I agree- use hot oil conditioners or intensive conditioners very regularly- and when combing through the tangled bits, remember to start from the bottom and work your way up through the tangles, or else you`ll end up with a big ball of hair in your hand and a bald patch. Godd luck- I hope it goes well.

Ouch! Did she have something new done to her hair?? Find a bottle of hot oil for hair, may need two bottles warm them up. Go in the shower with a large tooth comb, pour the hot oil onto hair and gentley work in down to the ends. Do not knot up the hair. Then slowly work the comb from the bottom up to the top. Take your time. Maybe best to shut off shower, wrap wife in towel and do it slow. Put on some music. When you are done, wash with a gentle shampoo, and comb in some conditioner. Poor baby, may need the ends cut if in bad shape. I have baby fine hair to my waist and can only comb it wet in the shower after I condition. Pantene has a nice spray detangle I use if need to comb when dry. Good luck.
