I have VERY VERY thick, curly hair and whenever I get a cute, short hairdo, it puffs up majorly. My friends say they have gotten their hair thinned. Does that really work? Does anyone know? Is there anything I can do to my hair to get it looking thinner and/or smoother?? Is there any haircuts or products I can get? PLease help if you can!! Thanks so much.
I don`t have that much useful info to contribute, so I`ll keep it short so as not to allude to the fact that I REALLY know exactly what to recommend here. ;)
I did hear once that hair stylists have a certain technique they use to take out some of the mass in hair.
Without getting it cut, I`d personally say that you could smooth your hair using straightening balm and a hair straightener when it`s totally dry. This takes forever, though, and damaging, I`ve found.
NO! NO! NO! NO! DON"T THIN IT! I`ve done this before! Thinning it only provides temporary relief and may be the source or the start of a larger problem...SPLIT ENDS!!! The thinned part will eventually grow out and you are back where you started... with frizz. I know it will be very hard for you to not thin it, since initially thinning it may look so good. If you do, please use a leave in conditioner to repair the damage. I`m struggling with the same problem as you are describing with my hair, and I am looking for advice as well, since I have tried thinning and it was a disaster! especially if you live somewhere very humid like TEXAS! I am using Loreal products right now and they seem to work ok. I`m still looking for better products and suggestions regarding the type of cut I need. GOOD LUCK!
OH YEA, I forgot to tell you I LOVE THE BIOSILK PRODUCTS!! THEY WORK WELL but are expensive. The leave in silk therapy serum is good to use through out the day to control the frizzies. I think this is the best product I have tried so far. ANY COMMENTS FROM ANY ONE ABOUT THIS?
Hi, I have really thick, extremely frizzy hair and I have my hair thinned. I never wear my hair down because its so frizzy so I have it thinned so its easier to manage, put up and the total mass is reduced. It also doesn`t tangle as easily.

Sammy K. I see your point. If you are going to wear your hair up all the time, I would understand why you would thin it. If your hair is anything like mine. you know you can`t pin up a mass of thick hair without looking like Medusa! Thinning, initially does make your hair more easy to deal with. AND YOU`RE RIGHT...THE MASS REDUCTION IS A BIG PLUS!!! That`s my biggest problem...the MASS! However. I don`t look good with my hair pinned up due to the shape of my face. So if you have to wear your hair down, I go back to my original point that thinning just causes more frizz eventually. Any suggestions?

well, Frizz Ease Serum/products work very well, but I have found that they are a little too expensive for my budget. One method of getting your hair cut so that there is not so much bulk is have the stylist cut "rope" layers. This means they take sections of your hair and twist it and then cut into it randomly. You can also have your stylist cut vertical layers into your hair. Yes, it is exactly what it sounds like. This way, you have the length to hold the hair down, but the bulk is no longer there. This works great, I`ve had it done about six times, and my hair has been shoulder to above my ear length. Good luck! (something that reduces frizziness is to either air dry your hair or use a diffuser on your blow drier. Also, the more you handle your hair after you put the styling products in it, the more it will frizz. I`ve had the best luck with putting L`oreal & Thermasilk products in my hair. the days I air dry-it takes awhile, but my curls are VERY defined. When I blow dry, they are a little softer.)
Thanks Blucurls for the advice! I have never heard of Rope layers!..But as you eluded to, this is a thinning mechanism.? I`m desperate, so I will try anything at this point, and I like your stating there is a way to get length TO HOLD THE HAIR DOWN WITHOUT THE BULK!!! That`s what I need! I also air dry my hair as you suggest, and I am very glad to see that you (like myself) have had the best results with Loreal and "silk" products. I like the Biosilk leave in hair serum. It`s great and doesn`t take but a dime sized amount on your hair to prevent frizz/flyaways. Do you live in a Humid state like TEXAS?

In Toronto (not much help to you i know!) there is a salon that has developed a cut that you could benefit from - www.valuenetwork.com/cuttingcrew called the tunnel or funnel cut where they don`t thin it but cut into the root to take out the bulk without layering - see if someone near you could do something similar. Good Luck!
i too have naturally curly, very curly, hair . but mine is pretty fine. i have my guy "texturize" it = this sounds wrong for fine hair but it actually gives it oomph. i`d give the texturing a try. there are special cschears to do it...goodluck.

I too have naturally curly hair and I have been a stylist for 14 years. I wish I could help you in person as I have tons of tips to help natural curly hair. Have you ever been to a stylist who specializes in curly hair? You can check your local salons. As for rope cutting, you MUST find someone who actuyally knows what theya re doing with this technique or you will end up with the worst haircut in your life. How short is your hair? If you wear a really short cut, It can be tapered in a way that it lays to your head. Again, the best thing to do is keep searching for a stylist who specializes in curly hair. There are many great products and knew ones coming out all of the time to help us with curly hair. The frizz serums help a lot when used in small quantity on dry hair. Unfortunately our best solutions are the products that are very heavy which in turn can clog your pores on your skin. Have you tried the Nexxus products? Therapy shampoo is one of the heaviest out there. Also, Joico moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, Humectress, Bed Head has some good products, actually I just started using a shampoo by them called Bumb Blonde (although I am not blonde, it is named that for chemically treated hair) it has the BEST feel! It leaves the hair very soft and pliable especially when followed by a heavy conditioner. Also for any who have damged hair, K-pak by Joico is the BEST! As for styling your hair, there is a product called Bouncy Creme by Lanza (who is also a great line). Use this before scrunching your hair on low setting if you do not diffuse. Has anyone taought you how to pull your hair out? Not too many stylist can do this without making frizz but there is a way. I have taken up too much space. I will be joining this group to give advise. If you have anymore questions, so not hesitate to ask. As for thinning, it can be done if careful. Depending on how much is done and how close to the scalp is what will determine if it is going to make the hair more frizzy. Good luck.

Yes thinning out the hair really does work....Good Luck!
my hair is a little longer than shoulder length, pretty curly and with brown permenant hilights.
the problem is i tie it back tightly because it frizzes out. now my hairline is receeding and i dont know what to do!!
i can`t really leave it open beause it`s always frizzing out. i`ve tried straightening, but it just gives me split ends and looks bad on me anyway. ugh, i`ll except any help people can give me!!
To nakisa, fist of all quit pulling your hair back-find an alternative style that doesn't put stress on your hairline. Secondly, start doing treatments with Paul mitchell tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner(generic can be found at sally's). Then deep condition weekly w/ bone marrow(can be purchased at sally's). Get those split ends trimmed and continue to treat your hair with tlc. i hope this helps.
Me and you, your cousin and your momma too rollin on da strip on bow's
