QuoteReplyTopic: Hair Color Crisis! Posted: April 24 2006 at 2:34pm
I have natural black hair, and I used to dye my hair brunett. I got lazy about it and hadn't dyed it for 6 month or so, so the root were growing out and started to look funny because half was brunett and half black with a distinct line in the middle of my hair.
Now I was thinking of going back to my natural color, and I didn't want to dye it anymore, but I had to so something about the half brunett half black line around my ear level.
SO I dye my hair to my natural color; black. And i have chosen "natural black", but the result was HORRIFYING!!! That color looks so EVIL.....I look EVIL.....it just does not suit me whatsoever. And I doubt the color is so unnaturally darker compared to my real hair. It's almost blue black, the color I always abhorred.
But it did not end there. I decided to fix it myself, and the very next day, dyed it again with brunett....now my soft roots are brunett but the body is still pitch BLACK!!! I guess I just added more color to make it even darker. silly silly silly me
Question: 1. what's the best way to handle this situation without damaging my hair? i) washing it 10 times a day ii) redying it (how long do I have to wait until the next dye) iii) bleaching it iv) use hair color remover (medicated shampoo?)
I'd rather wear a ponytail or bun forever to maintain the health of my hair than do something that would damage it. But if there is a way, I REALLY want to go back to the perfect world when I had perfect gorgeous healthy hair every day.....(ok I exaggerated a bit)
Thank you all!!!!! JY

I think you should have Colorfixed it before you tried to dye it back to brunette (removed the color and then dyed it.) You could probably do this now, but I'd apply it from the ends up since the ends are so much more darker. Then apply a color you want. If you're really worried about messing it up and doing more damage, I'd just go to a salon.
thanks, red legos, for your quick response and advice!!!
i am not a salon-goer, but i'll see how much they will charge me if the price seems unreaonsable(yes, the health of my hair is invaluable but i am kind of anti-spend-hundreds-$ on my hair type, you know) i will try to colorfix it (i bet that's a hair product, right?)
but for the time being i will wear my ponytail and see if the color grows on me i just needed natural black not blue black, which i hope is only a few shampooing away
thanks again for 'lightening' (at least) my worries ;) JY
For now, the most important thing you can do is condition your hair to keep it healthy. As far as how long you should wait to do another chemical treatment really depends on the health of your hair. If it feels like straw and/or is breaking off... wait. If it still has elasticity, you should be ok to proceed with removing color - but give it a few days to see if it fades to a liveable color. (I hope it does!)
Meanwhile, if it's not self-correcting going to a professional would be your safest option. But if that turns out to be too expensive, here's what I would suggest:
Use Colorfix (product by One 'N Only... in a yello box... available at Sally Beauty Supply) to remove the dye. As Red Legos said, make sure the color is evenly removed. Your ends are very porous so they have soaked up more color. Once you've Colorfixed, if you have some parts darker than others, Colorfix the dark areas again.
Use a porosity equalizer (also at Sally's - I've been using one by Roux lately) to help prevent that flat, muddly look on the ends when you recolor. When you're ready to apply the color do the roots first. Pull in though to the ends only during the last 10 minutes or so. Check it often to make sure you don't leave it on the ends too long.
Always do a strand test first - to make sure you don't end up with the blue-black that you hate and give you an idea of how long to leave the color on.
It sounds like your natural color may not be a level 1 "blackest black" but maybe a level 2 or 3 dark brown. To avoid the blue, you may wish to try a level 3 and if that's not dark enough, ease into a darker color later, once the roots start growing in again. It's much easier to add color if it comes out too light than to take it away if it comes out too dark. (As you've discovered the hard way!)
you are so knowledgeable on this matter!!! even if i like messing (this time literally T,.T) with my hair i guess i never had a crisis situation like this expect for a disastrous hair cut....(well it was really unfashionably short and i could not cover it expect with my bandana. depressed for a month, and that trauma kept me from going to a salon for a few years....)
anyways, i will try to look on the bright side (well bright side on my hair is the root now...sigh......)
but actually i am not too pessimistic about it as long as wear a pony tail, pin my bang to my hair, and keep the mirror away from me the world is still rosy ^,.^
but then i think i used to have gorgeous healthy hair that i could wear down and walk down the street with price
now i look like a bookworm in a sweatshirt (of course with my pony tail and pinned bang, and amazing how my hair color limits me from wearing certain clothes) who does not care how i look like which is not true!!
so i will study your words and try to decide best for my beautiful hair hidden behind this tragic black then brunette mess of colors
thanks again for your advice i really really appreciate your expertise!!!!
hope everyday is good hair day for everyone~ JY

You might find that it fades to a decent color. I ended up very black after dying over my bleached-blonde hair with dark brown. It was awful and I felt like night of the living dead, but I am back to a more natural color now. I had some damage to my hair so I didn't do any more chemical treatments and let it fade (and recover) for about 6 months. I also got alot of it cut off, because my natural hair color and texture was my goal. Finally I have my natural hair back, but it is still too short. Thank goodness it is growing well right now.
i still have my cannot-be-darker hair, pony tail, pinned bang well it is not too bad i guess i am getting a little bit used to it and i also started to wear cute clothes again
like hannebash said, i was also hoping it to fade but i think it ain't gonna happen in a few days and why do i have to put up with a 40% perfect hair when i can have 110%!!!
and i can't figure this out but yesterday i had my hair down to dry but when i passed by a kid, about 5 years old, he pointed his finger at me and laughed at me so i stock out my tongue at him so that's even but i still don't know what made him laugh...........not that i care......but i don't think i have a laughable face.....so is it my hair.....?.....it's mind bothering.....that little brat
i was going to follow karen's advice but i didn't have time to go to sally's yet
JY
BTW, i have so many spelling errors on my last post....kinda embarrassing *,.*
i did colorfix once, and because the color was uneven, i dyed it to the color that i wanted
but the result was back to black T,.T so i colorfixed my hair again and i become medium brown, a bit brighter than the color that i usually do, and also little uneven
but since it is MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better than the total blackness that's the state i decided to live with since i was afraid to dye it and became surprised with the result and being afraid of damaging my hair with too much chemical processing
now i am VERY happy to be back to my lighter color and now it finally feels 110% perfect
thanks karen, hannebash and red logos for your invaluable advice! it really helped me go through this hair color crisis
ende gut, alles gut!!!

I'm glad you feel better about your hair. I found that when I was unhappy with my hair (the cut, the dry fried texture and the color) I wasn't wearing any of my cute clothes either. Funny how we do that, huh?
