QuoteReplyTopic: Is my hair retarded or does every colorist I go to not know what their doing? Posted: April 18 2000 at 7:38pm
I have been struggling with my hair color for the past three years, and have not been satisfied yet! My hair is naturally medium brown and has a LARGE AMOUNT of red and orange hiding underneath. You can't tell by looking at it, but it is there. I have had my hair dyed professionally FOUR TIMES, and each time I have informed them of the large amounts of natural red that is in my hair. EVERY TIME I come out looking like a fire engine or ronald mcdonald. Even when I ask for a shade close to the one that I have, they make my head orange! What is causing this? Is it just the natural color of my hair? What can I tell the colorist so that she/he will know that my hair does this and they will know to prevent it? I have spent way too much money, and all I want is light golden brown hair. That shouldn't be too hard!!! It's not like I was making a drastic change from a dark brown to a blonde or anything, just from a medium brown to a light brown! I am in the Cleveland area, can anyone reccommend a good colorist in the area? I am desperate here!!!!! Please help me!!!!
In order to lighten dark hair, don't they have to strip your hair of color and then re-color it? I talked to a lady at a cosmetic counter about this recently. I also read somewhere that there are 3 steps they have to take: 1. Strip your color - basically bleach it to a shade lighter than the one you want. (this is what leaves your hair orange) 2. Fill the color - which is to apply the color you want without adding the developer to it, let that dry(don't rinse it out) and then, 3. Color the hair.
I am thinking that if you tell the colorist that your hair has alot of red/orange undertone he/she would use an ash or green based color. Usually this will help in preventing the bright red and orange tones to emerge when coloring.
You might want to very emphatically state this fact to your colorist the next time you go for haircolor. Sorry I cannot recommend a stylist for you in the Cleveland area as I am from Chicago.
