Sooo... I am thinking about giving my hairstylist a pretty free reign to do as she pleases with my next hair cut.
How much do you trust your stylist?
Have you ever done this?
DId it work out?
Was the cut you were given drastically different?

Stories, input, advice, cautions.. ALL welcome!

I think it's likely you'll end up with something not much different than what you have now.  Especially since clients have become so litigious, a lot of stylists are afraid to make too big a change.  Sometimes it's hard to get them to make a big change even if you know what you want and specifically ask for it, so asking them just to make a change with no instructions might not help.
More awesome than a manatee!

If you have a regular stylist who has done your hair for years and you've normally had trims or minor changes, I would doubt whether she would do anything too wild or radical.  I'd suspect that you could end up with layers, bangs or similar minor change.  It certainly happened like that with my wife who had a just below the shoulders bob type cut and wanted a major change.  Her stylist refused at that appointment and cut the front 2-3 inches shorter.

Prior to her current stylist of the last 5-years or so, my wife had bsl hair and always left the salon looking good after her trims but always got the impression that her stylist would have cropped her hair very short, had she been given half a chance - which was not what she would have wanted.

There would be no harm in asking your stylist  the question of "what would you do with my hair if I let you have a free choice".  You could get an answer that you weren't execting e.g. pixie cut or whatever - and then call her bluff and so "OK - do it".  Of course you may get a minor change e.g. a fel layers are whatever - but you won't lose anything by asking.
Its your hair, your choice and your decision

I'd say be careful what you ask.  You just may get it!

Free reign includes everything:  pixie, mohawk, mullet, and so forth.  Of course, you're talking about trust, but it all really depends on how important hair is to you.  If you can live with a haircut that you don't like, then it isn't such a big deal.  But, unfortunately, too often in life people will say, "Oh, I don't really care; you decide" and when the decision is made by the other person, the asker is disappointed or regrets giving up all input of the decision-making process.

Approach it this way:  Ask, "If I gave you free reign, what hairstyle would you give me," and if you like the answer, go for it.  Most hairstylists know what hairstyle will work for an individual.  Have fun with this adventure.

I think Hawg's advice is a great one! I would approach it that way. Me, personally, heck no. I would never tell anyone to do what they wanted with my hair. Hair is way too personal, and what the other person thinks is a great cut, could be something you personally dispice.

My youngest sister has a stylist that she just loves. Still, my sister has a very strong personality (she takes after me lol) so she is very specific about what she wants and how she wants it, when she is giving her hair stylist instructions. Is actually funny to watch, cause she was in the army and it looks like she explaining orders to her troops LOL. She loves her stylist and won't go to anyone else.

Well my other sister (I have 3, this is the one that is right in between me and my youngest sister) decides she wants to go get a hair cut with my sister's stylist. She figured, if my sister likes her so much, and she is so pickie and demanding, there is no way she can go wrong. Well, she decides to tell the stylist how my little sister thinks she is the best stylist in the world, and she has seen the great work she does on my sister's hair.  Then basically told her to do whatever she wanted with her hair. The results... Well lets just say she still cries and me and my sister still laugh about it. The stylist got a big head from all the compliments and started chopping away. The style was totally wrong for her hair. Thank God the style was mid lenght and she could still tie it back.
She grew out the cut already. But the point is you can't be that trusting when it comes to your most important accesory.

Personally I like to be to much in control to give someone else that much power.
