Hello everyone. I have always had long hair until about 5 yrs ago, when I slowly started cutting it off shorter and shorter. I must say I do like short hair better, but I haven`t had my hair cut much above my shoulders though. Here is the thing, my hair is so limp, and so hard to fix. I have two little girls and I don`t have time to mess with it much. I have thought about going with a VERY short haircut. I am kinda scared of this though, because I am overweight. I have heard that short hair on an overweight person makes them look bigger. I don`t want to look any bigger, I am 26 yrs old "I still want to be semi attractive." My face is oval, and my hair has no volume. I tend to get frustrated trying to fix my hair, that I end up throwing my brush in the floor, and pinning my hair back. I need some advice please. Thanks so much!

I`ve been cutting my wife`s hair for years (who incidently is also overweight). At the longest it has been about 6" past her shoulders and the shortest I ever cut it was an angled chin length bob. I think she looks much better with her hair longer than shorter (at least to her shoulders). She has a heart shaped face but the xtra pounds rounds it out more. When I cut it to her chin it curled under just enough to make her face look rounder and heavier than it already did. We both agreed the best cut she had was just brushing her shoulders and layered. Lots of body and movement and long enough to draw some of the weight off her face. If you would like some additional info/suggestions please email me and we can talk.

Hi,

From my observations of women, it does seem that bigger girls do tend to look better with their hair longer. Shorter styles tend to give the appearance that you are bigger, whereas the longer styles, do seem to hide it a bit more and are more flattering.

While your hair might seem to be a bit of a nuisance, please think long and hard before you go and cut it off, as I`d hate for you to feel awful about yourself with a short haircut that doesn`t suit you.

best wishes,

John

Try checking out pictures of different people around your weight on the internet.. when you see styles on different people, it`s a lot easier to be objective. I don`t necessarily think short hair looks bad on heavier women. Chin length hair, yes, will tend to make your head look wider. But, depending on the style, I think that short hair *could* look nice, if done properly. One idea might be to check out websites of plus-sized models and see what styles seem to work in general.

What seems to work for heavier women is not necessarily a lot of length, but a bit of length framing the face. Not bangs, however, which can close in the length of your face. One style that I`ve seen worn successfully on a lot of women is something that`s mostly short at the back, but with longer pieces (between 2 and 4 inches) framing the front, worn to the side of the face, like growing out bangs. This achieves the practicality of shortness but the tendrils soften the look. I`ve also heard that putting highlights around your face can make your face look slimmer.

Ultimately.. go ask a stylist a professional opinion. A lot of salons offer free consultations.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Also, check out www.HairDos.com. They allow you to enter criteria to check out a whole bunch of different styles and they actually have a "plus size" selection of styles. You should be able to wear any style as long as it is right for your face.

One other thought though. If your hair is limp (as in fine with no volume), short is not going to be an easier styling option. Shorter DOES NOT equal more volume, no matter what anyone tells you. I have fine, limp hair and I found that the shorter I cut it the worse it looks and the longer it takes to get ready in the morning. My advice would be to try for a mid-length style that can still be pulled back if you are having one of those days where nothing is working.
