Hi. My sister was told by her doctor that she had folliculitus (sp?). From what I`m told, folliculitus is like acne on the scalp and hairline area. Has anyone ever heard of this? Thanks.

The son of a coworker has scalp acne and is being treated by a dermatologist and says they have it under control. She was given a brochure that has this advice: "Some people get pimples on the scalp that may take a few weeks to clear up. This type of pimple is known as acne necrotica miliaris, and seems to flourish during times of high stress or when the scalp is oilier than normal. The latter may occur if you haven`t shampooed as often as usual or are using hair-care products with a lot of oil. To speed healing, shampoo frequently and apply an acne remedy with benzoyl peroxide. If the acne itches, use an anti-itch product with cortisone or wash your hair several times with a coal-tar shampoo." She says her son alternates between a quality moisturizing shampoo and a coal tar shampoo. The one he uses is by Denorex (price comparison at http://www.destinationrx.com/medicine/compare.asp?SubSubCatID=179). I hope this helps. Good luck to you and your sister! :)

Hi all.

Great advice Budoken. Thanks for posting all this helpful info.

My friend who is a dermatologist told me that another option for this condition is to consider the use a sun lamp for just a few minutes every other day to help dry out an oily scalp that can definitely be linked to these type of pimples. If a sun lamp is used it is important to use the lowest setting and start at only a few minutes with the light directed on the scalp and work up to 5-10 minutes or else the scalp can burn and this is another problem.

Denorex is very good but it can be irritating to some scalps. Coal-tar shampoos are good but you can also try Grandpa`s old fashioned Pine Tar shampoo which provides similar benefits as a coal-tar shampoo. Grandpa`s is available at any health food store and on the Web. Great product although the pine tar aroma is really strong so you know it is really working. :-)

Best wishes,
Karen
