QuoteReplyTopic: Can a permanent haircolor be used over a semi-permanent? Posted: January 06 2002 at 9:32pm
Hi,
I posted below about getting an all over permanent hair color done in the salon vs at home, and it seems the majority recommended getting it done in a salon. So I (nervously) made an appointment in my regular salon in two weeks. My hair color is dark brown, and I have been doing semi-permanant colors for years to cover some grey, and the last time was about 2 weeks ago (Loreal Casting in medium brown). I have been washing my hair daily since then, but I can still tell there is still a lot of semi-permanent left because 1) I have grey roots coming in, plus 2) the color is slightly darker (or maybe just slightly "different") than my natural color. I still really don`t see any noticeable roots (except for the grey) but I am sure that years of getting semi-permanent colors have built up in my hair.
Now I think I want to go with permanent color, mainly because of the amount of grey I have noticed lately, which is getting more difficult to hide with semi-permanent color without getting too dark. The result I am looking for from a permanent hair color is to stay fairly close to my natural medium to dark brown hair color to minimize roots, but I think I want a (very) slightly more "highlighted" look, instead of the dark brown I now have - maybe adding a little more gold or red tone. Can my hairdresser use a permanent color on me if there is still any semi-permanent left? If so, will it achieve the look I want? I sure would have to have to grow my semi-permanent all the way out because my hair is below shoulder length, plus I don`t think I could stand to see all that grey growing back in.
Hi Shelley, Most semi-permanent color lasts 4-6 weeks. If you are noticing that your hair color isn`t covering up the grey, it could be becoming more resistant, and a little warm tones in your new color of choice would add for better coverage. Sometimes over time even though they say it isn`t permanent, I have seen build up on some clients hair. If you have build up of the semi-permanent color on your hair, your stylist should remove that first before apply a permanent color. However, as a professional I have had clients who waiting the 4-6 weeks, and then applying permanent color had no problems. Talk to your stylist and have her determine the correct color for you. Your stylist can check your hair to make sure it is in good condition first, and don`t be shy about telling them, exactly what you want your hair to look like, it`s all about good communication.
