QuoteReplyTopic: My Hair Color Mess (with pics) Posted: June 12 2008 at 5:30pm
First, let me start off by saying that I’ve been lurking here forever and everyone here seems like a great bunch of people - so helpful and friendly J
Here is my hair color dilemma. I have naturally medium/dark brown hair, which I dyed red for over a year.
I then attempted to wean myself back into my natural color, by using a semi-permanent medium brown shade - big mistake, because it turned out nearly black.
I got it to fade considerably by using clarifying shampoos and by November ‘07, I decided to take the plunge dying it with a permanent medium brown color.
I’ve been progressively trying to go lighter (not blonde, but a light ash brown) for the past 5 months, with the last time I dyed it over 2 ½ months ago. That time, the roots of my hair took the color - while the rest of my hair stayed the same, if not getting a little darker.
My hair is now a myriad of colors - my roots are dark, then I have about an inch of light brown hair, followed by dark/reddish brown hair.
After reading through this site, I know now that you can’t lift color with color- which explains how my hair got to this weird stripped stage.
I’m willing to go to a salon (as long as it’s within 200 hundred dollars), but if I could fix this at home, that would be perfect. I went out and bought a box of Color Opps, but I am scared to death to use it - I know that the bottom half of my hair still has the red in it from last year, and I have a strong feeling I am going to come out looking like carrot top. Not to mention, wouldn’t my hair still unevenly take color if the bottom half has been stripped and the roots are natural? Should I simply use the Color Opps, go into a salon wearing a bag over my head and see what they can do, or just throw away the box and go into a salon to have them do it from scratch?
I DO NOT want to bleach my hair - I have thin hair to begin with, and am trying to grow it out - and while it doesn‘t feel damaged, I don‘t want to take the risk of having it all fall out. I just want it back (or as close to) as my natural color. If I want a change in the future, I’ll just stick with highlights/lowlights - this whole root/stripe thing is making me crazy.
I don't know if I understand correctly, but you want to go to a dark brown color that is an interesting vibrant brown color?
If you are going to go darker than any color that's already on your hair, there will not be much problem, I don't think.
You only need the Oops! if you're going lighter, but I would go to a salon and SHOW them a picture of the brown color you want. Don't use the Oops unless they say it's necessary.
Wella color and Goldwell color are nice and shiny and Redken. You could always go to a salon for free consultation, ask for a colorist that has been doing color for at least 10 years. and see what they say.

Remembering I am from the UK, so we may do things a little different so bare with me, lol.
First of all from your pics you have bands of colour, ie light roots darker middle lengths and ends. Going to a salon it will probably cost a fortune to fix.
To do at home, you can use either a coloured mousse, or semi, a natural brown colour. This is called pre pigmenting ( basically staining lighter porous hair to grab onto any darker colour you are wanting to put back onto your hair, hope that makes sense) blast dry your hair with a drier, then apply your target colour on top of this. This will even out the band of colour in to hair. As for putting a few slices of lighter brown around your face, you may have to lighten these areas to a orangy, then tone with an 8, to achieve this, as you have bands of colour, you will need to lift with bleach, as hi lifts wont even lift tint.
I hope this makes some sense to you, Amanda.

What you are describing is Colour Correction and it's most hairstylists nightmare!!! They will say they can do it, but they won't want to, and they will charge you through the roof!
I say, if you want to do this at home, get a semi-permanent hair colour (professional one like Matrix Colour Sync or Redken Shades EQ) in a Level 5 (will turn into a Level 4 on you).
Now, think really hard whether you want highligths or not, because if you do, then you need to do them BEFORE you colour your whole head darker! The highlights will come up easier and more brilliant, if you do them FIRST -- also you won't be trying to cut through colour and will be less damaging.
I would recommend you get a highlight kit (Revlon Frost & Glow is a good reliable one) and just foil in a few pieces around your face. Rinse it all off, then put heavy conditioner on them and foil them back up to get them out of the way. THEN apply your semi-permanent brown colour.
You only need colour remover if you want to go lighter, otherwise you can skip it!
Let me also say this: it would be 'safer' for you to just do the highlights prior to your event, then do your head brown because making a big change like this is not smart before a big event. if things go wrong (and they can in a salon as well), you are stuck with hair you hate! The highlights will lift you up and brighten your look and hide some of your different colours.
