(I did put this topic on the colour forum but I think it's better here)

Hi, I really want my hair mega icy-white blonde - I don't want ANY dark bits at all... I'd love it to be just like Gwen Stefani's, so I've booked a hair appointment to get it bleached all over.

However, I also want it to be curly (like Gwen's) with nice loose tousled curls, not tight ringlets. The only problem is, I don't know whether to have a perm or not because of the damage it might do with the bleaching...do I have to bleach it first or perm it? Or is perming it a big mistake? The other option is for me to buy some heated rollers... the only problem is I really want my hair to be curly everyday, and are rollers a bit of a nightmare to do every single day (time-consuming)...I bought a curling tong but as my hair is quite long and heavy it didn't give me any curls at all... what should I do? Can you get perms that would achieve a nice tousled loose curls look?

This is exactly how I want my hair :-

How could I achieve this look?

Get extensions like Gwen's. A month or so ago, her hair was this long:

http://www.multifaceted.us/Pictures/bw008_gwen_stefani.JPG - http://www.multifaceted.us/Pictures/bw008_gwen_stefani.JPG

She seems to get "new hair" whenever it's time for a hit CD or video.

I didn't even notice that she had extensions when I answered your question below. They don't look like extensions, rather like overprocessed and damaged hair.

She should have used plastikhaar.

How much would extensions cost? I don't really like the idea of getting them...

What about getting it bleached and permed?

For extension questions, visit the extension boards. If your hair is already long, extensions are not your solution.

I answered your bleach and perm question below on the hair color board. If you have another question, please post it there and i will try to respond if I am able to help you.

For me, Gwen Stefani looks like a white witch. I find the contrast of white hair/face and red, red lipstick a real turn off.

I think that her look is very good, on her!. I don't think anyone else can pull it of... She has been working on that look for quite some time. As have all the stars...

I have seen this look on others and it looked just as good to be honest.I know someone personally with white blonde hair like this(not naturally of course since it very rare) but it looks stunning. She is a natural blonde however so her roots can grow in a little without looking bad. This look is a traffic stopper so wear with caution, lol. The guys cant seem to get enough. And girls cant stand her even though she is a sweetheart. She gets nothing but dirty looks and hateful words. You dont realize how insecure people really are until your out in public with someone like her.

Hi there! When I said that I dont think alot of people can pull that look of I ment the whole look. Here in Sweden almost everyone has blond hair and alot of them have natural blond hair just like gwens white blond... I have to agree that some of them are traffic stoppers but in my opinion most of them look really trachy...

Well, I went to the hairdressers today, but they said they didn't have enough time to bleach my hair all over! I was so annoyed as I booked the appointment 2 weeks in advance! However, I found another hairdressers that should be able to fit me in soon. I'm still disappointed though, I really wanted it doing today.

Ergh... well, I bought some bendy fabric rollers the other day, which you use on dry hair and sleep on. However, they came out like really Victorian-style ringlets, which REALLY isn't the look I wanted. How would I be able to get Gwen's curls easily? Any tips for using the rollers?

I read an interview about Gwen either in Cosmo or Glamour (can't remember) but she said she never trims her hair because it breaks off anyway from the damage of bleaching her hair. But she'd never change her color because she loved it so much. If you got your hair bleached I wouldn't perm it because you would surely have a lot of breakage from the damage. Extensions would be much better.

I think you will find the style she has on that mag cover uses a lot of products and isn't something you can were all day and keep that look.  That being said, if you still want to try... load your hair with good stong hold gel or mouse, when its barely damp roll it on big sponge rollers.  When its totally dry, spay your hair (still in rollers) with a stong spray.  As you take out the rollers, spray each curl and style with your fingers.  Good luck!

She's very pretty, but so much hair damage it breaks off all the time. . . that's a bit too high a cost, I would think. . .  I'm sure she'd be even nicer-looking if she would take better care of her hair.

I think this relates to the thread on Nicole Kidman. Gwen is trying to blanch herself out into some cartoon type character as a response to natural aging.

Yes, I went to a salon the other day and they took some of my hair to bleach it, to see how it would turn out. I had a look and it looked ok but a bit frizzy, and they said they wouldn't reccomend me having it done. But honestly, I am sooo desperate to have it this color, I don't mind a bit of breakage as long as the overall result is good.

They said that the damage was probably because I dyed my hair a few months ago, and that I should probably wait to grow it out, which I really don't want to do. I really want it bleached all over now, do I just go for it? My hair won't all drop out will it?

Paradise - You should definitely go for this look. I was you
once and I have no regrets. Two things: One, have them dye it
and cut it as short as they have to to make it healthy. If you
have to go buy extensions at that point, do it. I have them and if
you spend the money, it's totally worth it. Two, if you're willing
to compromise a little on the overall max platinum color, you
can make it much easier on your hair. Have your whole head
of hair lightened within two or three shades of platinum and
then come back a few weeks later (after treating the new color
with strong conditioning), and have half or 2/3ds of your hair
taken to Gwen's color.   More of your hair will survive it and
you'll get the look you want.

Has Gwen had plastic surgery?  What did she look like before, then?

Not sure about that. We need to ask the expert, Kramer--or go directly to awfulplasticsurgery.com

Just meant that both of them try to offset the aging process by taking all the color out of themselves--by whatever means.

Oh well, I went to lots of salons and nobody would bleach my hair, they said it was too damaged.  They said that if I really looked after it and gave it a big conditioning treatment then if I came back in a few weeks they might be able to do it. They said the reason it's so damaged is because I've already coloured it myself with stuff you buy in the shops. Also, I wash my hair everyday, which probably doesn't help either, so I've stopped washing it so often now. I'll just have to wait a few weeks and see what happens. I really want it blonde now though! Oh well, I'll just have to be patient.

they ahve? Huh... well that's so silly. I myself dont' believe those are fake.... not in the slightest...
As for you Paradise, I'm real sorry. I know how you feel. I had the same problem.
If only we could all have what we want hey? Besides the whole white hair doesnt' work on everyone... and I've also heard from hairdressers and people alike, that no matter how much you condition your hair it won't change it... it will never really be "REPAIRED". But yes, washing it everyday dries it out terribly. Just do as they say and go back and see. If not... just don't do ur hair Gwen's way. We can't all afford millions of dollars to shell out on our hair like she can. :) :D
ROCK ON!

Padded bras... the greatest thing ever evented... most likely a air or water bra if it created the look of them being fake. There is actually a bra being made that the idea is for it to create the look of FAKE breasts. So it must push them together and sort of round them more. I dunno.... anywhoo. YAY!

She looks very ordinary when brunette.  I don't think she'd be the sex symbol she is, had she kept her natural hair.

It makes her eyes pop. You notice them more. They are large and brown, very pretty. I like it, if she was just some girl walking around like that, I'd say she was beautiful! :) I like the brown, but the blonde his her personality and it works for her.

Ok, so here's a bit of an update on my hair situation. I've been going back every few weeks to the salon to see how my hair is doing on the conditioning front, and it's been getting a lot better, so I booked an appointment for the 1st of September for it to be bleached all over. However, I still have a curl problem and I really need advice on what sort of curling tong to buy, because I think that's the only answer. I'm considering buying a Carmen Angel Curls curling tong, their apparently very good but do you think they will make my hair look like Gwen's in the pic?

They'd probably work. With less damage too. They steam curl the hair don't they?

Yeah I think they do... hopefully they'll work. I think a spritz of hairspray would be enough to hold them in place, right?

I hate this !! I can't stop sobbing I feel awful. I don't know what to do, I just went to the salon and they said I could have it done and I got all ready and sat in the chair and then she came out with "would you like chunky highlights or thin?" and I was like "Aren't I getting it bleached all over?" And she said she couldN'T bleach it all over but would do highlights as it would have the same effect. I trusted her to do it and I waited forever while she foil-highlighted it with bleach and it just looks the same!! You can't tell at all that I've had anything done, nevermind bleached highlights. I didn't say anything when I was there because I'm pretty shy and don't talk much. I didn't want to say that it looked the same so I just left it and came out crying. I've wanted my hair platinum blonde for ages and I've been going back so many times, spending so much on conditioner, and all for nothing. It's the only thing I've been looking forward to as my life is so messed up I don't really have much to look forward to. I just feel so awful. I don't know what to do!! Help please!!

Well, I've cheered up a little since then... (although my eyes still hurt from the crying) but I've booked an appointment at another hairdresser to have this special L'oreal Professionel service that makes your hair 7x lighter. Hopefully it'll do something to make it look nicer. It also doesn't damage your hair like bleaching but has the same effect. Hope it works! I'm having it done on Saturday and I'll post pics if all goes well.

Hi Paradise,

Keep in mind that to get hair white blonde like Gwen you have to use a major lift factor which is always bleach no matter what anyone tells you.  The problem for many people is that to get from even medium blonde to white it takes a very high volume of bleach which strips the hair of basically everything...thus the breakage and damage.  So I would be personally suspicious of the L'Oreal service that says it doesn't damage hair.  How can they take you super light without removing the existing color and thus when the color goes...so do the natural oils and the cuticle layers.

I just want you to be prepared for the possibilities that your hair may be a lot lighter but most likely will be even more dry and damaged.

When it comes to lightening hair to the Gwen Stefani levels, you have to take super drastic lifting chemicals.  That's it.  No other options unless you want to add extensions.

Ashlee Simpson recently went Gwen white-blonde and her haircolorist Rita Hazan said it took 4 hours to take her from honey blonde to white-white.  That 4 hours was spent with lots of heavy bleach on her head leeching out any speck of color.

So I just want you to keep all of this in mind as you go forward.  If I had a $1 for every email I received over the past 7 years from people with destroyed hair because of bleach I would be retired and living on a beach somewhere doing absolutely nothing.  :-)

It took a while, I mean like 3 hours and it was absolute agony just sitting there but it was worth it. They said I'd need to get my roots done once a month, and in a while I could go back and get it taken to Gwen's colour. They didn't put a toner on it but I'm happy with how it turned out.
