What are you currently doing to your hair?  IMO I doubt her ethnicity has anything to do with it unless she went to a good cosmetology school where she was trained to do all types of hair and she has had real life experience with all types of hair.

I wash and deep condition every week. I do the baggie method about twice a week my hair is not shedding though that is my point and I have seen improvement

Not that it matters so much but what shampoo and conditioner are you currently using and do you use a blow dryer and or flat iron?  If so, how often?

I would find a new stylist QUICK. She said that you "NEED" a perm? How dare she? You don't NEED a perm at all, especially if you're trying to grow it out and transition. The rest of what she said isn't even important to me.

You don't need a perm, she just needs you to get one so she doesn't have to deal with kinky hair and she can charge for the relaxer. Any real stylist could blow dry your kinky hair straight so it isn't noticeable next to relaxed hair. Any stylist who pressures you into getting a chemical service you don't want should be avoided! What the hell would she do if you were all natural? No one needs a relaxer if they don't want one, and don't let her tell you that you need one.

And if you notice your hair is getting better, growing, and has less shedding, you're doing something right! Maybe it was the "perm" that had it in trouble to begin with!

Think about it.....you stopped perming to stop damage, it gets better, and her advice is to perm it again? Time to find a new stylist. I wish you were in Atlanta, I have a good stylist I could recommend you go to.

Also, talk to Pokahontas about straightening natural hair. Her hair is all natural, and she has it straightened better than a relaxer, and it's gorgeous.

If your hair is too soft, like my mother's hair, almost ANY relaxer will damage it.
