How much it too much?  One is ok.  Then the other 4 are all sorta sitting on eachother about 3/4 away from my scalp.  They feel secure, but I didn't get alot of info from the shop I got them done at...so what do you gals think?  It's only been a week, what can I expect them to wear like?

Depending on how many times you shampooed, if she sewed your braids down, please post a pick.

While we're waitin' for pics, the short answer to your question depends on your hair texture.. some silkier hair types "slip" more quickly than coarser hair types. But given that your scalp tends to be on the oily side, and you are washing more frequently the braids are probably loosening up a little faster than you would like.. Do you know if she sewed the braids together to help keep them in place?? (you may have already answered this..) The other thing for next time is to have her use a net over the braided foundation this will help keep things in place a little while longer..

Dayum.. I was hoping I was going to see more pics like the first one.. (Which isn't bad, and what I expected to see..) The other pics are more problematic.. They are definitely slipping.. You said she used synth hair in the braids right??

Wow.. the lower tracks are the problem correct??

We need Hair Dr Shiry in here.. because once the braids are loose like this, they have to come down.. Did you call the shop and tell her you are having issues???

No, I haven't.  Honestly, I prolly won't.  It's ALOT of work to coordinate getting down there.  I could manage it once in a while, but not all the time.  The drive itself is over an hour, plus organizing the kids, etc...  They aren't all that bad, I would say that one is the worst.  The rest are half way between that top one and the bad one.  I"m getting close to pulling out the super glue....Unhappy

Well here's one trick you could try.. Go to Sally's and get yourself a weaving needle and thread.. If Sally's doesn't carry this in your area, Kristin also sells them in her store (weaving needles and the thread)

You can pull the loose track up to the track above it and sew the loose track onto the track above it. Keep doing this for all of the loose tracks until they are all nice and tight again..

It needs to be heavy thread.. Since you make jewelry, you probably have thread that will work already.. The needles are special in that they are curved with a rounded point.

No worries girl.. You know we're gonna get cha all fixed up.. I really think after EVERYTHING you've tried that this is a good method for you.. Just gotta work out the details.. Lemme know if this works.. (it should)

OH.. and ONE more thing.. make sure you sew around the wefts and not through them.. Here's my little lame pic on how to tie off the first stitch.

I am so sorry to report that your sew in tracks are not saveable.
The stitches are not sewn close together.
The braid itself is not sewn down.
The stitches are not neat.
You will have to take your hair down.
Sorry, Shiry

Well, I liked doing the undetectable with the silicone lined rings. They stayed better for me. The one with the shrinkie was pretty good also. I've tried it on a couple of clients and it lays pretty flat overall. I like it, not the ring I was trained on, it never stayed in the hair for me; I purchased some rings from Dr. locs and they still don't work for me, they don't hold without slipping. What was your experience?

Shiry, do you think I should report back tothe shop owner that these didn't last long?  OR should I just chaulk it up to a learning experience?  And, do I have to take them down now, or can I wait until the become uncomfortable or show?

Considering they have been in a short time I think you should go back to the shop owner. All the things that I mentioned comes from a professional point of view, but here is what you can say if you are going back to have services redone.
I just got my hair done_________ and I have not shampooed my hair as often as I normally do and my tracks have slipped a great deal. I was examining my hair and it looks as if my hair is more than 6 weeks old. Is there any type of gaurantee that you provide for individuals of my hair texture?

If they say: You must have shampooed or brushed to hard.

you say: I hold my tracks at the base as I brush and I use a looper brush to brush my hair.

Any other questions or anything just give me a holla, i can tell pretty  much what is going to be said, but just give me a ring and I'll help as much as I can.

I emailed her already.  We'll see.  I actually wouldhave said all those things, cause, I really was gentle with these.  My guess is that she will come back and say this is a temporary style and I wouldn't have gotten more then 2 weeks out of it anyway.....It says something to this effect on thier website, and altho they don't specifically say weaves, they did say cornrows.  So, we will see.  I'm hesitant to go back and get them redone.  One, because, I literaly would have to pull my son out of school for a day, drive a couple hours to grandparents house, then drive over an hour and a half down to the shop.  Two, because I'm worried my hair would just do the same thing again.  Maybe it'll turn out okay and she will offer some $$ back to me.

Well on causcasian hair I think two things need to happen to make this method last longer.

1. The braids have to be sewn together BEFORE the tracks are sewn on
2. I think a net sewn over the foundation is a MUST with hair that is prone to loosen faster.

I believe you did all the right things.. I think your install was not the best.. Shiry has caucasian clients as does my stylist.. Now granted most caucasian clients cannot wear sew ins for 8-12 weeks.. However 4-6 weeks is very possible with a good install..

Go figure, huh?  The only place I find does a crummy job......I must be able to find another salon closer.  There are others down there, just not in great areas.  There is a shop in Mattapan MA that even uses and carries Bohyme, but I'm not going anywhere near there.  Living in the sticks for the last 3 years has taken some of the city girl out of me Embarrassed.

Hey, how soon do you think I need to take these down?

Posted By: Shirilyn
Date Posted: October 15 2006 at 3:50pm
Well, I agree with you especially if have to be totally inconvenienced by this, but in order for that business to be able to get more caucasian clients they need to know and see their mistakes. As far as money being refunded, I don't think that is going to happen. Now since this is an issue on their part necessary arrangements should be made to make sure you are happy with your experience.......Since you don't have a full install, you have braids throughout your hair, your braids should have been sewn down for reinforcement.

they have curved needels there- they are used for quliting- but i think they are probally pointed and could prick you. so if you go this route try rubbing the tip on cement to dull it...

Posted By: Shirilyn
Date Posted: October 15 2006 at 9:07pm
Oh yeah I forgot to mention since you are removing it on your own use a seam ripper. Feel along the thread. If that doesn't work have someone take it down. The thread is brown so whomever takes it down will see the thread. And then you take the braid down.

This week will be my first "real" install using this method on a client. (I've only practiced my stirching on my doll heads) I ordered the silicone rings, I figured they'd give a longer hold. The only problem I see with shrinks, is that they can't be retightened.
Do you use the stitch Marcella showed?(The one where you crisscross your loop and pull the needle through) I'm finding myself just doing a half hitch(coming under and up)

Thanks Shiry,

In your experiece...do you think doing a basic stich vs. the cross stitch will bear any difference?
I keep my stitches close and make two pases per ring

I think I read in your earlier post you used docs rings? I think the feedback was better on the rings from http://www.yourhairshop.com - www.yourhairshop.com (Not sure if 101 and Shrinkies.net carry the same) Check out youirhairshop...she's carrying microthin thread! I ordered it so I'll give feedback after this install!

yeah, the cotton thread sucks. It wants to try and tangle on you. I was going to order some clem yue, but didn't get around to it. Doc locs rings are hard to close, very hard rings. The also fold if they are on. Don't like them. The adhesive is okay though.

Hey girls, you may want to try a product called "thread heaven".  It gives a sorta static effect to the thread to reduce tangling without leaving any residue.  It works really well for me when I'm working with small threads, such as nymo nylon or even DMC floss for cross stitching.....You can pick it up most craft places or your local bead shop or yarn shop

He uses both the net and the sewing interlocking technique. I just wonder how an individual with hair can keep the hair neatly wrapped? I guess you can if you are sewing the hair onto the hair and the weft. i will look up the web address, sorry i am confusing you.
